Joan burton minister for social protection has set up what has been called a new carrot and stick approach to the unemployed masses of ireland. The carrot is not suffficient ,and either is the stick for that matter, the carrot being jobbridge, and the stick being that social welfare can withhold your welfare for up to 63 days, and having the powers to reduce your social welfare payment..As far as i can see there is no new thinking on how to approach those who have lost their jobs,or are not adequately qualified or experienced to take up jobs.. Jobridge has been uncovered as a scam,to bolster up employers staff without expense, and can re-hire more job bridge workers as they please.Where is the incentive to employ people, take on paid work when job bridge is in the way of that. What employer is going to pay people to work when job bridge is for free? It is clear the government have not thought this through properly for whatever reason. Below is an article on this issue by Tom Boland. read full story / add a comment

As well as covering the latest Syrian developments, Yassamine Mather writes on the effects of sanctions in Iran. The events we are now witnessing in the Middle East, the “United States’ accidental diplomacy” regarding Syria1 and renewed talk of the resolution of Iran’s nuclear programme were unexpected a few weeks ago. Having declared that the use of chemical weapons was the “red line” the Syrian leadership should not cross, the US has now accepted Russian proposals for a ‘diplomatic solution’ read full story / add a comment ![]()

The coming referendum on the abolishment of Seanad Éireann would, if passed, remove the existing constitutional right of the President to refer proposed Bills to the people for a referendum. It would pass the initial responsibility of passing Bills into law onto the Dáil alone - a dangerous development, particularly where any ruling party might hold an overall majority. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Just stop for a moment and imagine the power and belief in working class political non violent direct action. What have we done with the words of Irish Scottish political activist CONNOLLY: "you can hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle but unless you build a Social Republic, all your efforts will be in vain"

‘Unity’, the newspaper of the Communist Party of Ireland, on the 24th of August carried a front page article entitled “Facing up to Sectarianism”. The article addressed question of public protests. Despite the glaringly obvious presence of a current and existing Orange threat, more than half the article, written by Lynda Walker dealt instead with republican parades- and specifically RNUs Henry Joy McCracken commemoration which (as it turned out) was re-routed out of existence the day after the article appeared. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Tariq Ali looks at the various "revolutions" in the Middle East and writes: The idea that the Saudis, Qatar, and Turkey backed by NATO are going to create a revolutionary democracy or even a democratic set-up is challenged by what is happening elsewhere in the Arab world. Full text at link. Ever since the beginning of the Arab Spring there has been much talk of revolutions. Not from me. I’ve argued against the position that mass uprisings on their own constitute a revolution, i.e., a transfer of power from one social class (or even a layer) to another that leads to fundamental change. The actual size of the crowd is not a determinant—members of a crowd become a revolution only when they have, in their majority, a clear set of social and political aims. If they do not, they will always be outflanked by those who do, or by the state that will recapture lost ground very rapidly. read full story / add a comment |
