The High Court meets again on Thursday at 10.00 am. There is confusion about what is preparation, constuction etc. etc. For the lay observer a call to rescind all project consents by the Minister might be in order at this point. No mention at all of the QRA and if Shell has produced all the documents ordered by the Judge previously. Project splitting comes across as a very primitive procedure in this day and age. Now there are phases as well as splits and one wonders if the Minister has time for all of them and why the project comes in this format. Good job building a house does not come in splits and phases with the planning authorities. Now the floors, now the windows, now the septic tank......! read full story / add a comment

Dozens of Nigerian women from four local hostels are currently living in fear of deportation - despite their harrowing accounts of abuse. They have called a 1pm protest on Thursday 14th July at Dáil Éireann to highlight their situation. Below, two of the women explain a little of their stories and the threats they face if returned by Justice Minister McDowell’s fast-tracking policy. Residents Against Racism is working closely with the women and lending its full support to the protest. Spokesperson Rosanna Flynn commented: “The oppression of Nigerian women is no ‘cock and bull story’. It’s time McDowell started listening and stopped sending women and children back to persecution.” read full story / add a comment

Demonstrate 1pm, Thursday 14th July, Dáil Éireann, Kildare Street, Dublin A group of Nigerian women who have fled horrific experiences including sexual slavery, forced genital mutilation and male violence have called a demonstration aimed at halting the state’s efforts to ‘fast-track’ them back to abuse. This controversial policy is based on the myth that Nigeria is a safe country. For women and girls in particular it is anything but. One of the women in fear of deportation spoke of her concerns for her daughter: “I fled from Nigeria because my wicked in-laws demanded that I bring my only remaining daughter for the same circumcision that killed her sister. We cannot be safe if we are forced back.” Backed by Residents Against Racism, the women are calling for support for a rally outside the Irish parliament on Kildare Street at 1pm on Thursday 14th July. read full story / add a comment
