Woman whose soup run fed 250 homeless in Dublin told to cease or face €300k fine

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | other press author Wednesday February 07, 2024 21:35author by indy Report this post to the editors

Sunday World is reporting on the forced shutdown of a soup kitchen in Dublin for the homeless because the group were not registered as a charity.. However the group say due to the excessive regulation imposed that if they registered as a charity their costs would escalate and they would be forced to make it commercial. And this appears to be exactly the goal of the government to stop any voluntary soup kitchens and so prevent the likes of 200+ homeless people showing up to be fed on Grafton street.. It embarrass es the government too much

The Sunday World writeup is very good and here are a few snippets but for the full article see the link below

The Wicklow group, Together for Homeless, which has operated a weekly soup run to provide some 250 people in Dublin with food, clothing and even bedding for eight years, has been forced to cease its activities

Following receipt of the letter, she made the announcement on the group’s Facebook page that: “It’s with great sadness and a very heavy heart that I have to inform everyone that Together for Homeless can no longer continue feeding, clothing and providing much needed shelter for the most vulnerable homeless people and those in food poverty.

“The government are ensuring one by one that all soup runs close as they know that commercial kitchens just aren’t viable. This has been in the background for some time and unfortunately now has become an obstacle we can not overcome. I personally have been involved in helping in Dublin for the last eight years as have my children and many of my friends. We truly are devastated.”
