Iranian youths staged a massive protest on Wednesday, calling for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s death during the Persian celebration of Lag Ba'omer. In the western city of Ahvaz, youths of the Arab minority chanted "Freedom is our legitimate right" while crowds shouted “Death to Ahmadinejad” while lighting bonfires in the city of Sanandaj. Bonfires and firecrackers are traditional in marking the occasion. Police officers attempting to arrest the revelers were greeted with a barrage of firecrackers and other missiles. read full story / add a comment

Some weeks ago, with last weekend's Winter Soldier event on the horizon, I talked to David Zeiger, through the freebie magic of Skype. He's the directer of the documentary Sir, No Sir. It's a Displaced Films and BBC production that came out about two years ago, and focused on the GI movement to end the war in Vietnam. It consists in part, of interviews with veterans explaining why they resisted the war, and in some cases went as far as to defect. Hundreds went to prison and thousands into exile, by 1971 it was a movement that in the words of one colonel had “infested the entire armed services” - yet few people today are aware of this soldiers movement against the war in Vietnam. read full story / add a comment

On this the 92nd anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising, Ógra Shinn Féin proudly remembers all of those who died for the freedom of Ireland. We would like to extend our fraternal greetings to all our imprisoned comrades, to their families and also to all the families of our patriot dead. As we gather throughout Ireland this weekend paying homage to the sacrifice made by Ireland ’s patriot dead, we are ever mindful of the tasks that lie ahead. 92 years ago the Easter Rising shook irreparably Britain’s colonial hold on Ireland. It rekindled the flame of freedom in Ireland, and today, that flame continues to burn strong. read full story / add a comment

On the evening of Wednesday the 19th of March, the Connolly Youth Movement demonstrated outside the department of foreign affairs against the banning of our fraternal comrades, the Czech Communist Youth (KSM.) The picket lasted for around an hour while lots of leaflets were distributed to passersby. Letters of protest were also delivered to the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Czech Embassy in Dublin. This action was part of an international day of solidarity with the KSM as they were in court contesting the decision of the Czech Interior Ministry to ban them. read full story / add a comment

A person who is caught red handed having sex with a sheep or horse or indeed any other animal will go to jail. Anyone distributing tapes containing explicit sexual handling of animals by humans will get a fine. Holland is known for its live sex of (usually illegally imported ) people with fish, dogs, sheep, horses, etc. and last year a lot was done to highlight this in the news all around the world. The Dutch freed kidnapped girls who were forced to have live sex with dogs in a show. The girls were send to a detention centre and deported. A law was formed to protect the dogs. At least a law will be implemented soon. Of course we will not stop here. Kidnapping and forcing girls to do these things should be forbidden too but so far the Dutch make too much monies on this so no law will be implemented and only paper tigers exist. They thought this one over for four years!!! Nice one. A sheep would take a shorter while to come up with this law. http://indexx.knipt.nl/?p=175 for the story in Dutch. read full story / add a comment

The Council of Europe has called on Ireland to decriminalise abortion. This week , the Council of Europe's Committee on Equal Opportunities issued a report saying all member states should guarantee women the right to a safe termination of pregnancy. The report states quite clearly: “the Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men considers that a ban on abortions does not result in fewer abortions, but mainly leads to clandestine abortions, which are more traumatic and more dangerous.” Some people estimate that the number of Irish women who travel to England every year is about 7,000. Since some women obviously use false British addresses, or disguise their origins in other ways, the true figure can never be known. read full story / add a comment

Have they seen the brutalisation of protestors instigated by the quango that comprises the NRA? The EU , this morning answered a tabled question regarding the ongoing works at Tara, the EU believes those works are stopped. Protestors have been criminalised and brutalised as a result of a media driven government campaign to isolate them, in the belief that ordinary commuters think they need the toll road. read full story / add a comment

News coming from the Meath conference of AGSI says that the Gardai want murder trial televised for General Public viewing, supposedly that would up the clothing allowances of the judge's bench and provide a cannon fodder of violent and disturbing viewing for the General Public. Maybe they will provide interactive buttons for people to get involved in the legal process. The risible reason for this suggestion is to show 'us' the great people and public viewers what Gardai must suffer in the courts. They seem well enough appraised of the rights of the individual and one of those is the presumption of innocence. read full story / add a comment

Around 60 or 70 people rioted in Finglas in Dublin last night. Cars were burned and crashed into roadside barriers. A large force of police engaged in running battles with the rioters, and twelve people were arrested. Local people allege that the riots were a "celebration" of the release from prison of a local criminal. Others have claimed that the easy availability of alcohol, coupled with the complete absence of any meaningful activities for youths in the area, were the cause of the trouble. read full story / add a comment |
