The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) is set to distribute 40,000 condoms to Irish students as part of the ‘He Says, You Say’ sexual health campaign launched earlier this week during National Condom Week sponsored by Durex. The campaign – also endorsed by the Crisis Pregnancy Agency and the Dublin Aids Alliance – will see 30,000 sponsored condoms distributed to students at the Trinity Ball tomorrow evening (Friday 12th May). read full story / add a comment

A revenue source has claimed that hundreds of taxi drivers are deserting their jobs, rather than submit to rigorous audit checks being carried out by the Department of Revenue. Rogue drivers have been amassing undeclared income, and under new tax clearance rules established by the regulator when the industry was deregulated, many are falling prey to the new tightening of regulations. read full story / add a comment

It is being organised by the people who did the work to put on the 1st and 2nd Irish Social Forums in 2003 and 2004 and it’s called the Dublin Social Forum (DSF). If you’re into saving the environment, establishing gender equality, getting the debt dropped, facing down racism, dismantling/smashing capitalism, rebuilding our communities, ending war ... then I think you should come. In other words for those who oppose the violent racist sexist war-waging community-destroying public-service-selling ecocide of a neoliberalist capitalist system and its processes of globalisation, there must be some way that we can meet each other publicly, and this forum is one way to meet. [Scroll to the end for this months DSF title, venue, details, egroup, etc.] WHY SHOULD ONE GO? I firmly believe that politically and environmentally there is too much at stake for us not to engage each other, I firmly believe that one way to do this is through active participation in an open political forum and that in this forum we can create an atmosphere where we can learn what opposing neoliberalism means to others like us but not necessarily the same as us, in this forum we can learn from each other so as to better understand the world around us, and to build trust and action to co-ordinate and strengthen our various struggles for the betterment of all. Part of the demand for such a monthly antineoliberalist forum springs from the observation that sectors of the antineoliberalist movements, be they trade union, development, hard-left, environmentalist, libertarian, gender, human rights, community, etc, tend to meet just themselves at their own meetings, protests and conferences, and that one of the things we need collectively, is a challenging open space, a forum to learn from each other, to try to convince each other to support each others perspectives and campaigns, to build alliances for specific campaigns and issues, and to perhaps learn to work together better for the collective benefit of all our struggles ... or indeed to clarify the issues on which we disagree. read full story / add a comment

Despite the goodwill towards the ISF, throughout 2005 there was a quite limited number of activists willing to put in all the work required to stage big one to three day type Social Forums. In light of this, activists involved with the working groups of the Irish Social Forum in 2003 and 2004 have proposed to focus on the local: the Dublin Social Forum, and to hold the event monthly and in the evenings. 30 people may come, or 150, we’ll see! THOUGHT THIS MIGHT GIVE YE A LAUGH BACK HOME!- A good way to get used to indymedia is with "Indymedia Bingo" once you can cross off all the squares you should know the site pretty well; finding a chicken liberation article is really easy, which is why you need 3 before you can yell bingo. an American conspiricy article is harder- Hint: it most likely wont be posted as an article, but as a comment on a totaly unrelated article. The other squares such as "Happy Vally Protesters" and "Dogmatic Anti-Leninism" are also quite easy. read full story / add a comment

Perhaps, yes! However, if Ireland is to establish a press council we should look elsewhere to see what lessons could be learned from such an endeavour. The British press introduced this form of self-regulation in 1953, but Commissions set up to examine the effectiveness of the council were critical. In their book Power without Responsibility, Curran and Seaton, argue that the council should “embody and promote a professional culture among journalists.” This would be the ideal, but the reality has proved somewhat different. The press council has been criticised by a number of Commissions, which threatened “government legislation,” and brought much needed “reforms”. In 1977, the Commission imposed sweeping changes, which led to further reforms from 1989 to 1990. A new “code of conduct for journalists” was proposed, but the Calcutt Committee recommended that the press council be disbanded and replaced with a more effective body. read full story / add a comment

According to a report published by the London School of Economics and written by Joan O’Mahony, the Pope in his position as Cardinal and head of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith knew of the existence of married priests in the Czech church in 1990. The problem arose because Czechoslovakia was under strict Communist rule for 40 years, and launched a crackdown on Catholic clergy. Under the Communist regime, a “secret clergy” or “underground” church developed when Czech bishops took over the clandestine ordination of men whom the state refused to approve for ordination. Introduction. When looking at the reasons why the NGO’s might be up in arms when facing the policies of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, I have decided to focus on Trócaire and Concern, two Irish organisations passionately involved in debt relief for the Third World. Concern has been in existence since the Biafra famine of 1968, and has become internationally recognised in the intervening years. Trócaire was set up by the Irish Catholic Church in 1973 as a response mechanism to combat disasters, famines, and to offer aid to the “world’s poorest and most oppressed peoples”. Its been just over a year now since the last ISF so maybe we should have another one this year. There has been lots of activism since then and the movement for global justice [or whatever we are called] has a lot to link up about. On top of that the ESF is back this year, this time in Greece. Is anyone bothered? A crowd of us think that people should get together and talk about it. Events in Belfast over the weekend seem to have been missed totally by indymedia. Despite serious violence and rioting, not to mention heavily armed assault on the police, there is nothing to be found on indymedia. read full story / add a comment |
