international / rights, freedoms and repression / news report Thursday December 06, 2007 10:03 by China watcher
A group of leading Chinese lawyers and academics have demanded immediate abolition of the country's infamous system of "laojiao" (re-education through labour), saying it is a serious impediment to efforts to bring about the rule of law in China.

The "re-education through labour" system allows the police to jail everyone, from political dissidents to drug addicts and prostitutes, for up to four years without going through the courts. There has been talk of scrapping it as part of legal reforms, but so far only cosmetic changes have been made. But now 69 well-known experts and rights advocates have petitioned the legislature to immediately examine and abolish the system, saying it contravenes the Chinese constitution. read full story / add a comment

Striking Classroom Assistant held a protest outside the Belfast office of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions on Monday to demand a trade union inquiry into claims that the majority of Classroom Assistants have voted to accept managements offer.

The offer was forced through a meeting of the Joint Negotiating Council for education workers in Northern Ireland last Friday by the employers and GMB/UNISON. The decision was taken despite the opposition of the biggest non teaching education trade union, NIPSA, and the abstention of T&G.

During the period of strike action Stormont Education Minister Catriona Ruaine has made repeated calls for NIPSA to ballot its members. NIPSA has pointed out that every offer made by management has been brought to consultation meetings of members but in an effort to clarify the situation and to remove the Ministers excuse for not negotiating offered to ballot members last week. This offer was ignored.

Yesterday afternoon, friends and family of Robin Hennessy gathered under an overcast sky in Kanturk graveyard to bid farewell to a stalwart of the anti-war movement and other social justice causes. Above all, we bid farewell to a man remembered for his enormous capacity for love and who was motivated in politics by his deep concern for the well-being of other human beings.

CIA Rendition Plane N71PG at Shannon 3 Dec 2007

A CIA controlled Learjet reg no N71PG was refuelled at dawn this morning at Shannon and made a hasty exit within the hour. It had been due two hours earlier, in the hours of darkness as usual.
Unlike the two other CIA planes recently refuelled at Shannon, Gulfstream N476LC refuelled on 30 Oct 07 and Gulfstream N478GS refuelled on 30 Nov 07, both of which were notorious torture rendition planes, we know very little about N71PG so far. Please carry out some research and try and dig up its CIA history. We should remember that when the now infamous N379P, known as the Guantanamo Express was first seen at Shannon and logged on indymedia by Tim Hourigan, we were not even aware of the CIA torture rendition programme. Such murky and gross violations of human rights are by their very nature very difficult to expose. read full story / add a comment

Yet another provo leaves party, admits that provisionalism is about administrating British rule in Ireland. Some say no one could have "predicted" the manner in which the provos have turned. However Republicans at the time of the 1986 split correctly "mapped" the future of the provosionals using proir history. Indeed while anyone with any grasp of history could have done so, only those affiliated with RSF did.

Having fought their way through weeks of attacks by their employers/Sinn Fein/DUP, Classroom Assistants yesterday faced another barrier to a just settlement of the ongoing job evaluation dispute. Today comrades kicked off the festive protesting season in style with a picket of the Shell station on the Finglas road. Even in the bitter cold, our spirits were high as we lined up for the picket, to highlight the injustices happening everyday in Mayo. We started the protest at 12.45pm along with the Gardai who had also decided to join us in force.
