Protesters Halt Another Day of Shell's Work

category mayo | environment | news report author Monday April 18, 2011 13:59author by J Debender - Rossport Solidarity Campauthor address Aughoose!author phone 0851141170 Report this post to the editors

Actions are continuous!!!

On Friday 15 April, work was halted when two people locked on in front of the gate to Shell's compound.

Around 10am, people from the Rossport Solidarity Camp went to Shell's 'temporary' compound in Aughoose where Shell is drilling boreholes in preparation for laying the pipeline. Two people put their arms into a lock-on, making themselves impossible for the gardaí to remove without special equipment. The guards came and issued their section 8 warning but were overall pretty calm, knowing there was nothing they could do until the cutting team arrived.

The cutting team arrived around 3pm, and everyone who wasn't locked on was moved from the road by the gardaí. The two people were cut out of the lock on and arrested, but were released without charges.

By the time the lock on was removed Shell had already given up working, and the workers had left (by foot, as their gate was blocked). For the whole day no equipment could be moved in or out of the compound.

Currently folks from the Rossport Solidarity Camp are building structures and setting up the camp in Aughoose opposite the Shell compound, and actions are continuing to happen. If you'd like to visit and help with setting up the camp or be a part of actions, there is plenty to be done! Contact the camp at 0851141170 or rossportsolidaritycamp[at]gmail[dot]com

The camp is preparing for the May Day Summer gathering which will be happening May bank holiday weekend, April 29-May 2. Come up and see for yourself! For more information visit: rossportsolidaritycamp.org
