NUI Maynooth President urges students to vote for Bill Cullen's book!

category kildare | education | news report author Wednesday May 12, 2010 01:13author by Professor Ahern NUIM. Report this post to the editors

Only weeks after Bill Cullen dismissed Irish young people as lazy and almost allergic to work, telling us that we should be working for free, this gem arrives in the email inbox of every student in Maynooth.

"Dear Student,

I am delighted to inform you that Bill Cullen’s book “It’s A Long Way From Penny Apples” has been nominated for the “Book of The Decade Award”. Bill has given his support to NUI Maynooth over many years and we were proud to award him with an Honorary Degree in 2005 for his charitable work in Ireland. I would invite you to support this nomination as he is a very worthy recipient.

Best regards

Professor John G. Hughes

Was Bertie's book not nominated? Scandalous!

Surely he is not permitted to do such a thing, openly canvassing like that?

Here's a link to the book awards site. Canvassing on behalf of a title on the shortlist is not prohibited apparently. So if people want to canvass on behalf of something by David McWilliams instead now is their chance.

Old Moore's Almanack didn't get to the shortlist along with Bertie's ghostwritten 'memoirs'. The connection between the two is that Old Moore fails to predict the important things (and gets somethings cockeyed) while Bertie failed to foresee that his past windfalls would catch up with him.

It's as good as any of the rest of them and it was for charity.

Is this the same Bill Cullen invited by Hughes to receive an honorary degree in the same building where the students were doing their exams? Not content with that level of disruption the bould Cullen arrived by car and then had his helicopter pick him? Landing right beside the examination rooms, disrupting the exams for all the students?
Oh yes, they're both an example to our third-level students aren't they! Give us a break, Hughes is a managerial bully and Cullen thinks that all young people should work for nothing - preferably for him I suppose.
Vote for decent writers like Colm McCann and Toibin - The Master - one of the best novels ever!

The president has the cheek to send us this email right before our exams and doesn't even wish us all the best in our exams. So unconsiderate!!!
