Green fingered republicans arrested

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | press release author Wednesday August 24, 2005 19:31author by Green Fingers - Ógra Shinn Féin Report this post to the editors

Two Republican activists have been arrested recently whilst painting a postbox green in Co. Tyrone.

Two Ógra Shinn Féin activists from the Tyrone area have been arrested recently for painting post-boxes the colour green in county Tyrone. It is understood it is a part of a campaign undertaken by the republican youth group, Ógra Shinn Féin, to paint post-boxes green instead of the ‘colonial red’.
It is understood that this campaign had originally been started in the early nineties and has recently been kick started again.
A spokesperson for Ógra said “We started this campaign a number of years ago whereby we would paint post-boxes green in prospect of Irish Unity and as a sign that the British writ does not run in the north of Ireland. It is a way in which we can assert our national identity in a matter of our choosing. At present there are upwards of 100 post-boxes painted green throughout the 6 counties. I would urge everyone who feels strongly about Irish freedom to get out and get active on the issue, this is a novelty way of contributed to the struggle for Irish freedom. At the end of the day we are saving An Post the job of painting the post-boxes green when Irish freedom is achieved."

Hardcore lads, really hardcore. The Unionists must be shitting themselves over this strategic movement.

Isnt it strange how many Republic threads have popped up lately? The pub provos must be running out of songs down the boozer.

As for unity, see my other post about this. Its not happening folks without a majority decision to do so.

Provo comment, copied from above:

'Anyone who thinks that Lifford in Co. Donegal and Strabane in Co. Tyrone are in two different countries, they need their head checked'.

And I say: anyone who in 2005 thinks that it matters a fuck whether Strabane/ Lifford are within the same jurisdiction needs their head examnined.

"After Ireland is free, says the patriot who won’t touch socialism, we will protect all classes, and if you won’t pay your rent you will be evicted same as now. But the evicting party, under command of the sheriff, will wear green uniforms and the Harp without the Crown, and the warrant turning you out on the roadside will be stamped with the arms of the Irish Republic. Now, isn’t that worth fighting for?
...
“With the Green Flag floating o’er us” and an ever-increasing army of unemployed workers walking about under the Green Flag, wishing they had something to eat. Same as now! Whoop it up for liberty!"

But sure give him a few years and its
"On Sunday, April 16, 1916, let the date be forever remembered, Dublin witnessed a scene that moved thousands of men and women to tears of joy and thanksgiving. On that day the Irish Citizen Army, the armed forces of Labour, on the top of the headquarters of the Irish Transport Workers’ Union, hoisted and unfurled the Green Flag of Ireland, emblazoned with the Harp without the Crown, and as the sacred emblem of Ireland’s unconquered soul fluttered to the breeze, the bugles pealed their defiant salute, and the battalion presented arms, strong men wept for joy, and women fainted with emotion."

An end to british rule in Ireland and the dismantling of the sectarian state of 1921.
Is that not the aim ?

How is postering as a political purist going to get progress on this issue ?

How is sounding like the brit / freestate intelligence services going to achieve irish freedom?

While I expect a anti-SF response, can you really discount the only political party which has massive support from the republican community in ireland..is your mission to subvert this constituency ?

While I am not a patient person, I have always believed that irish unity should have happened yesterday..I still believe that unity, followed by the building and maintaining of an irish socialist republic must be achieved by any means necessary.

It is not the falling that matters, but the landing.

First off - you completely ignored the points I raised in my original post . Have you no comment/point of view on the issues I posted on ?

"While I expect a anti-SF response, can you really discount the only political party which has massive support from the republican community in ireland..is your mission to subvert this constituency ? "

-- My response was anti- Provisional SF ; I do not support any Leinster House party , believing , as I do , that none of them have a Republican agenda . If I were to support a political party simply because others did so then I would probably support FF - they have , after all , "massive support" in areas where others have not . My "mission" is to attempt to "subvert" British mis-rule in this country - not assist in maintaining same .

".I still believe that unity, followed by the building and maintaining of an irish socialist republic must be achieved by any means necessary... "

-- Agreed . But how does the following fit in to your equation -
"We are really prepared to work an executive . We are really prepared to administer British rule in Ireland for the foreseeable future . The very principle of partition is accepted . " - Francie Molloy , March 1999 . How will doing that achieve your stated objective ?

"It is not the falling that matters, but the landing."

-- That would depend on where you are falling from . The top of Stormont , perhaps ... ?
