"Apartheid based on race is outlawed now, but the system always went far deeper than that. The cruelty and injustice were underwritten by an economic apartheid, which regarded people as no more than cheap expendable labour. It was backed by great business corporations in South Africa, Britain, the rest of Europe, and the United States. And it was this apartheid based on money and profit to allow a small minority to control most of the land, most of the industrial wealth, and most of the economic power. Today, the same system is called – without a trace of irony – the free market"

On Tuesday's issue of the Derry Journal, the newspapers editor highlighted the city's 2013 bid to make Derry the Culture Capital of the North.

Whatever peoples views on the issues surrounding Derry's 2013 'cultural bid', in the article itself the editor published an image of the model Donna Feldman poising as a giant in her underwear at under Ferryquay Gate.

Animal rights activist, Robert Ševcik, walks out of court a free man yet again. For the third waste of time, to be precise.

Sergeant Eamon Lynch of Pearse St Garda station, with the aid of the DPP, brought a prosecution against Mr Ševcik, stemming from a protest and a work of obvious fiction that was composed in November of 2008.

Below are excerpts translated from a leaflet by the Communist Party of Iran (Marxist-Leninist-Maoist) . Dated 5 February, it was put out on the occasion of the 31st anniversary of the people's uprising that toppled the Shah in 1979. Full article text at the link.

As millions of Iranian people all over the country await 11 February their hearts are beating hard.. Brave women and men are planning to turn that date into a decisive day. The enemy is also planning to stay in the field and not lose its perilous balance. The chants of "Down with the Islamic Republic of Iran!" will come from the heart and find echo in other hearts.

Over the last eight months the Iranian people's anti-regime movement has significantly inspired the people of the Middle East and other parts of the world. They too are enthusiastically looking forward to 11 February. The Western imperialists and Russia and China who are all as reactionary as the Islamic Republic are already speculating about "Iran after 11 February" and expressing their concern about the "future of the Middle East and Iran" – which means concern about their interests in Iran and the Middle East! read full story / add a comment
