Dick Donoghue, Margaretta D'Arcy and playwright and novelist, John Arden, will read from their work at Galway Arts Centre, Nuns Island, on Tuesday, November 23rd, starting at 8pm. Admission is €5. The evening is organised by the Western Writers' Centre - Ionad Scríbhneoirí Chaitlín Maude. Music is by Clare Sawtell (cello) and Mary O'Sullivan (vocals, instruments) two musicians who have played together for a long time in a variety of arts' events throughout the country. read full story / add a comment

On October 12th 2010, Jimmy Mubenga was killed by GS4 security guards in a packed plane waiting for take off on the runway at Heathrow, London. While being deported to Angola he was being heavilly restrained by security guards and had complained of breathing problems. Kevin Wallis, a passenger on the aircraft, said he heard Jimmy Mubenga complain "I can't breath, I can't breath" for at least 10 minutes before he lost consciousness, and later observed that handcuffs had been used in the restraint. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Garda Sergeant in Charge at Shannon airport asked Edward Horgan to produce evidence that the US Hercules warplane at Shannon was carrying dangerous munitions or war-criminals. When Edward Horgan attempted to go towards the airport to get such evidence he was prevented from doing so by Gardai. Yassamine Mather writes about how sanctions are worsening the situation of ordinary people in Iran. How the regime are cutting subsidies on food and somewhat foolishly targetting pensioners. Over the last two weeks the number of strikes in Iranian factories and workplaces has risen considerably. Workers have taken action in major plants such as South Pars Gasfields, Alborz Lastic Sazi, Ghaem Shahr textiles, Safa Louleh (pipe manufacturers), as have city council workers in Abadan.
