The military council in Egypt, the SCAF, is more and more isolated from the Egyptian masses each passing day. Once the people chanted in Tahrir square, just before Mubarak's fall, that the Egyptian people and "their" army were one. Now it is becoming clearer the gulf separating the two of them: while the people still suffer from inequality, poverty, violence, military courts targeting protestors, emergency laws inherited from the hated dictatorship, the SCAF is making sure that "transition to democracy" is nothing but empty words. They are doing everything in their power to make sure that nothing at all changes. It may be that the people toppled in February the commander in chief, but all of his repressive building was left intact, and the military's role, headed by general Tantawi, is to make sure that the status quo is not challenged. This is transition to democracy as promoted by the USA and the civilian-military elites of Egypt. So the dictator is gone, but everything remains untouched. read full story / add a comment

The discussion continues as to why climate modelling may underestimate Arctic sea ice loss. In recent decades, Arctic sea ice has suffered a dramatic decline that exceeds climate model predictions. The unexpected rate of ice shrinkage has now been explained by researchers at CNRS, Université Joseph Fourier and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They argue that climate models underestimate the rate of ice thinning, which is actually about four times faster than calculations. This model bias is due to the poor representation of the sea ice southward drift out of the Arctic basin through the Fram Strait. When this mechanism was taken into account to correct the discrepancy between simulations and observations, results from the new model suggested that there will be no Arctic sea ice in summer by the end of the century. This work was published in the Journal of Geophysical Research on 29 September 2011. read full story / add a comment

Monday October 10th is World Mental Health Day* which aims to raise public awareness about mental health issues. The day promotes open discussion on mental health, and investments in prevention, promotion and services. This year the theme is "investing in mental health" and according to Manus Hanratty, the new CEO of the SpunOut.ie National Youth Organisation, Ireland needs to wake up and take action to address the youth mental health crisis facing our country. Ireland has the youngest population in Europe with 40% under 25 and according to Manus Hanratty there is an urgent need to invest in the younger generation if we are to build a sustainable, inclusive and happy society. read full story / add a comment

In the days prior to the Loughgall executions Jim Lynagh had a meeting at his flat in Dublin Street, Monaghan Town with one of his Intelligence Officers. Lynagh often worked one-on-one with people in order to minimise the risk of infiltration by the security forces. In his final meeting with this individual Jim Lynagh handed over a small black box for safe keeping, it was Lynagh’s view that following the Loughgall attack his flat in Dublin Street would be raided and he did not want the Gardai to find his black box in which we now know he kept his personal diaries. The black box has remained sealed for 24 years and is only now opened with a view to trying to cast some light on one of Ireland’s most fearsome IRA Commanders. read full story / add a comment

United States ambassador to Syria Robert Ford is quite a feisty diplomat. He shows up unannounced and uninvited at various hot spots in the country, greeted with varying degrees of enthusiasm and, oftentimes, anger. When he made a highly touted appearance in the city of Hama in July, residents reportedly greeted him with flowers. John Pilger writes about what Assange faces in the upcoming court case. The High Court in London will soon to decide whether Julian Assange is to be extradited to Sweden to face allegations of sexual misconduct. At the appeal hearing in July, Ben Emmerson QC, counsel for the defence, described the whole saga as "crazy". Sweden's chief prosecutor had dismissed the original arrest warrant, saying there was no case for Assange to answer. Both the women involved said they had consented to have sex. On the facts alleged, no crime would have been committed in Britain. read full story / add a comment |
