Overheard in Dublin 2. Leaving the rich untouched while bleeding the people dry appears possibly an official policy. Based largely on an assumption that there is 'really no suffering' and those claiming pain are delusional, our leaders suffer little and act accordingly. Three out of our top four ministers were once teachers, they have had long and successful political careers and have never known the suffering that comes from austerity. There is an insidious absence of understanding for those who carry this state, the workers for the most part in the private sector who provide vital services and support through tax for the equally vital services provided by our state. These privately generated taxes are vital, without which there would be not support. The forthcoming budget has apparently not been discussed in An Dáil though is only days away. Joe, walking on Grafton Street describes this as 'pathetic'. read full story / add a comment
Face of Pseudo Gang
international / rights, freedoms and repression / news report Tuesday November 27, 2012 21:08 by BrianClarke   image 2 images   video 2 video files
When standard military operations and bombing failed to defeat the Mau Mau insurgency of Kenya in the 50s, the British created gangs of friendly tribesmen, who were pretending to be terrorists. These "pseudo gangs," quickly threw the Mau Mau on the defensive by befriending, then ambushing, genuine freedom fighters or guiding the British to freedom fighter camps. What worked half-century ago is still undermining trust among today's resistance to British Occupation in Ireland. Forming fake republican groups, is a British speciality in Ireland today, practiced since 1971, when Kitson recruited 'turned' IRA members, nicknamed the 'Freds' operating undercover in Brigadier Kitson's area of responsibility. read full story / add a comment

You are invited to a lunchtime talk and discussion on the recent Israeli attack on Gaza. The meeting will take place on Thursday 29th November from 1pm to 2pm in Theatre M in the Newman Building in UCD.

The meeting will look at the recent 8 day assault on Gaza by the Israeli military - which left at least 160 Palestinians and 5 Israeli citizens dead, and saw hundreds of others wounded – and discuss the conflict in terms of both local and regional geopolitical developments: upcoming Israeli elections; the Arab Spring; the drive for war with Iran; the political de-isolation of Hamas; the Palestinian UN statehood bid, etc. It will also look at what the offensive meant in terms of human and civil suffering.

At yesterday's pre-budget anti-austerity march there was a turnout of up to 10,000 people from a diverse range of groups. The march was due to set off at 1pm but finally set off at 2pm led by Austerity on a horse followed by a colour sea of banners and placards. Groups ranged from SIPTU to community groups, pissed-off citizens and quite a large group of supporters from the Campaign Against the Household and Water Taxes. read full story / add a comment
