Article 40.6 of the Constitution of Ireland guarantees "the right of the citizens to assemble peaceably and without arms."

Speakers Corner We, The People claims this right.

There's a lot to say right now, a lot to discuss and we need to talk. We need to talk out loud and in public - we, the people.

This is a platform for inspiration, a chance to listen, to argue, to act!

"A rallying point for the disaffected!", as Connolly cried out!

The Cherry Picking of the Mainstream Media

This story shows once again the sickening results of the abuse of the word freedom. The American and British public should hear about this. How does this rank alongside the story of the young Pakistani campaigner, Malala Yousafzai? It's a sickening outrage and a disgrace.

"On Sunday night (Jan. 6th), 18 month old Saiyma Gadazai froze to death in the Kabul refugee camp where she was born. Her father told how they fled the war in the South. He held both NATO and the Taliban in equal contempt. She was laid to rest next to a 3 year old boy called Janaan who died in the same camp 13 days ago. Also from exposure. This country has been under the control of the richest nations on earth for over 10 years. For children to be dying like this in its capital city is utterly obscene. SHARE if you think something should be done about this!" - Guy Smallman *** See link for photos.

In Brazil we have a history of abuse and arbitrariness: from the most vile censorship, like that practiced during the "military dictatorship*", even dishonest and virulent attacks carried out by sectors of the press, against institutions, citizens and even banks.
It is controversial the relationship between freedom of expression and the degree of development of societies.
Many seek to justify the repressive character of the current regimes as a price that must be paid for achieving progress.
Throughout history, however, people fought and died for the right to speak, to question, to publish.
It is no coincidence that in many countries today, people debate legislation on the subject. This is the case of our neighboring republic, Argentina, to name just one instance.

Although we did not ultimately stop US military use of the airport, through Indymedia reporting, documentaries, the massive demos, sit-ins, die-ins, walks, vigils, and the highs and lows of years of several court cases, all helped to focus intensive national and international attention on the Government’s policy of allowing such transits through neutral airspace. read full story / add a comment

US involvement in destabilising progressive regimes in Latin America has continued under Obama with coups in Paraguay and Honduras. Full text at link.

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa has said the CIA may try to kill him prior to upcoming elections. Citing reports of a plot to “destabilize the region,” Correa said the threats were “credible,” given the history of US involvement in Latin America. Correa alluded to reports by Chilean journalist Patricio Mery Bell, who allegedly passed on information to the Ecuadorian government that President Correa’s life was “under threat” by a CIA plot.

“There are many cases of [the CIA] interfering” in Latin American affairs, Correa said during a campaign tour in the coastal province of Guayas. “These are credible [reports] because this has happened before in Latin America.” read full story / add a comment

Syria’s president has outlined a plan to end the country's conflict, starting with a halt to international support to “al Qaeda-linked terrorist groups.” The solution proposes a new constitution and government, as well as national reconciliation. President Bashar Assad said that his government had never refused a political solution, but would not negotiate with terrorists. He then stressed that the only solution was a Syrian proposal to end the crisis.

“The political solution entails regional and international powers halting their support for armed groups, which will be followed by a halt in our security forces' crackdown against them,” Assad said in his first public address to the people of Syria since June read full story / add a comment

Fears are growing in Dublin, that the British will again bomb the city, under the cover of loyalism, as Belfast loyalists are threatening to come south, after a third night of loyalist rioting in Belfast, with gunshots being fired in east Belfast yesterday. Three nights of rioting by the paramilitary UVF, escalated yesterday, with the help of British fascist from England. Tonight again saw attacks against both the PSNI police and residents of the nationalist Short Strand enclave been augmented by fascists and Nazis from England. read full story / add a comment

Civilian deaths have risen by 28% in Afghanistan, In Yemen and Pakistan Drone attacks increase, not just Al Qaeda and Taliban die, many civilians perish in these far from surgical strikes. Ironically the miltants killed by the US in Pakistan, Yemen and Afghanistan hold the exact same beliefs as the Jihadists backed by the US in Syria, Egypt and across North Africa. Even more bizarrely the US arm Jihadists in Iranian Baluchistan while they fight another branch of the same organisation in Pakistani Baluchistan! Did it ever cross the minds of the CIA that weapons supplied in Iran work just as well in Pakistan?

In the US, Obama has signed into law the bill which continues the operation of the Guantanamo Bay prison camp and allows for indefinite Military internment without charge for US citizens.

Time for the good news: The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has awarded damages to a CIA torture victim who was subject to extraordinary rendition.

The political internment of Marian Price, is a clear a breach of Article 3 of the European Convention of Human Rights and of Article 5 of the Convention. The Convention protects the individual from being subject to torture including inhuman and degrading treatment Article 3 and also the right to liberty and security of the person Article 5. Those in detention are also protected by the United Nations Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners and in by common law doctrines and the rules of natural justice as developed the domestic courts read full story / add a comment

There is a currently a very interesting and frightening case being fought by a Solicitor firm in Dublin against agents for the Irish newspaper industry. Basically the newspaper industry is trying to charge for websites and blogs and all the rest for posting links to any of their articles in their newspapers. They have already done the groundwork in their submission to the Copyright Review Committee in July 2012 those 15 newspapers asserted baldly

“It is the view of NNI that a link to copyright material does constitute infringement of copyright”. (Section 7 National Newspapers of Ireland Further Submission to the Copyright Review Committee) read full story / add a comment

How the SWP Junta treat their members with contempt. Peter Manson writes on how dissidents are treated.

Commenting on the contributions from a minority of Socialist Workers Party comrades in the second of this year’s Pre-conference Bulletins, I wrote: “It is most encouraging that these … comrades … are clear-sighted and courageous enough to make such far-reaching proposals - proposals aimed at transforming the SWP into a genuinely democratic-centralist force, capable of playing a leading role in the struggle for the mass party we so desperately need”. I concluded: “It remains to be seen for how long they would be tolerated if their ideas began to make headway” (‘An anatomical investigation’, November 8).

Unfortunately, however, even before those ideas have had a chance to make such headway, the central committee has responded in the only way it knows: by summarily expelling two of the comrades who had written such powerful criticisms, together with two others who are alleged to be involved in “secret factionalism” alongside them. read full story / add a comment

Yassamine Mather writes on the resolutions which have emerged from the Imperialist backed Tribunal on Iran, on how sections of the Iranian Left have damaged themselves through association with it. Some let themselves be fooled but some were scoundrels. Genuine Democracy will not come to Iran through Neo-Cons or CIA Fronts. Full text at link.

In the good old days of the Moscow trials it was customary for fallen members of the Soviet leadership to disappear from group photographs, their image wiped out of history, as they fell out of favour with Stalin. How ironic that the 21st century unholy alliance between Iran’s soft left and neo-conservatives in what is known as the Iran Tribunal seems to have adopted the same method in dealing with the embarrassing outcome of its second phase.

The Farsi version of the long-awaited final resolution never made it to the IT website and the English version1 has been either removed or hidden away somewhere where it is difficult to find.2 As the embarrassing clauses were translated into Farsi, the organisers were confronted with a barrage of criticism. The soft left has attempted to justify the disappearance of the final statement with the claim that the ‘findings’ were temporary resolutions - although the ‘prosecutor’, Payam Akhavan, and his allies consider the job done and deny the ‘temporary’ nature of the findings. read full story / add a comment
