In a case even a rightwinger would support, Milnes Foods strikers are continuing their work stoppages .While progress has been made in areas, the right to collective bargaining, union representation, pro-rata pay for the cleaners and mechanics are some of the outstanding issues in this bitter dispute between some seventeen or so brave SIPTU strikers and the company of Milne Foods, of Birr in Co. Offaly. A Labour Court hearing is lated for December 12th. They are on one day work stoppages each Friday from now to Christmas, support from all would be appreciated. read full story / add a comment

Protest Against Racist Attacks & Oppose Racism Saturday 16 November at 2:00 pm. Assemble at the Front of Tallaght Hospital The Anti Austerity Alliance - Dub S.W has initiated a protest this Saturday at 2PM to oppose recent racist attacks in Tallaght, to fight racism, and to mobilise the community to show their opposition to these incidents. Recently, a disgusting attack took place on a Halal shop in Cookstown Industrial estate which saw the shop ransacked and sprayed with racist graffiti. Press statement 13 November 2013 ANTI AUSTERITY ALLIANCE, Dublin 15 Campaigners are taking part in a second protest against water metering in housing estates in the Huntstown area of Dublin 15. Residents and members of the Anti Austerity Alliance are delaying work on the installation of meters by Irish Water in the Huntstown Wood estate. Speaking at the protest, local Huntstown resident, Bernadette Rynne, said: " We find it incredible that they are digging up our footpaths to charge us for water when there has been a water shortage and the obvious thing to do is fix the leaks. On Remembrance Sunday 2013, Veterans For Peace UK walked to The Cenotaph under the banner ‘Never Again’. The message on the back of our tops read “War is Organised Murder” which is a quote from Harry Patch, the last survivor of The Western Front who he died in 2009. Among the 18 veterans who attended were men who had served in World War 2, SE Asia, Northern Ireland, Dhofar, Macedonia, Afghanistan and Iraq. I am involved with a number of groups that focus on opposing animal cruelty and from time to time I receive details of what people involved in controversial practises are getting up to. In particular I receive occasional information concerning what appears on a website called "Greyhound Nuts", a site that deals with aspects of Ireland's greyhound industry but specialises in promoting hare coursing. read full story / add a comment

Today during the March of Independence in Warsaw (Poland), nationalist militants broke off from the march and attacked the squat "Przychodnia" social centre. They were trying to "get" the centre. The police stood by and did not intervene for at least 20 minutes read full story / add a comment

The plan for a huge number of wind turbines is not just running into trouble. It seems it could turn out to be a bit of a white elephant. The drive is coming from the UK because the population density is so high they are running into continual problems with objections and as a result they are unable to meet their own promised obligations for the percentage of renewable energy. But they have done a deal with the Irish government to use the 'empty' midlands of Ireland to build thousands of wind turbines and transfer the power by cable to the UK. To many these seems like corporate colonialism and the though of all the billions in investment with the chance to then quickly sell complete wind farms on has all the worst kinds of people involved and the Irish government and their friends have been so eager to get hands on this that the Irish government has incredibly not even carried out a Cost Benefit Analysis of the whole thing. With wind farms if the site is not windy enough and too many turbines are put on the site, it can result in a situation where they do not meet the targets for power output and hence revenue and it can result in the venture not covering its costs properly -i.e. making a loss. This has happened quite a bit in the interior locations of various countries as the strongest and most consistent wind generally occurs on coastal sites. And Colm McCarthy, the ‘Bord Snip’ economist, has already described the drive to build wind farms all over Ireland as another potential ‘Nama’. read full story / add a comment

In the afternoon of the 2 November, the peasant leader César García, president of the community association (Junta de Acción Comunal) of Cajon La Leona, was killed in cold blood by a shot to the head as he returned to his homestead with his wife and son [1]. García had become visible through his participation in the Environmental and Rural Committee of Cajamarca for the defence of life, water and food (Comité Ambiental y Campesino de Cajamarca por la Defensa de la Vida, el Agua y el Alimento), an organisation which has been leading the community´s struggle against the large-scale extractive project La Colosa. This open-cast mine has been denounced in Tolima because of the disastrous impact it would have on the community and the environment. The community of Tolima has expressed its rejection of the project through a series of massive demonstrations in defence of water and life, as well as through a popular consultation which took place in the municipality of Piedras on 28 July. On that occasion, 99.2% of the population rejected the mega-mine, with participation of approximately 60% of the electorate [2]. read full story / add a comment

n the 1980s, when the US-funded a counter-revolutionary war against the Sandinista government , solidarity came from many quarters in the form of diplomatic support, donations and international work brigades. Between 1988 and 1993, 145 people from Ireland participated in a total of 10 solidarity delegations and work brigades. The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) has written to management of Glenveagh National Park expressing its concern that large areas of sensitive habitat are being destroyed illegally and for commercial purposes. The Park, which is one of only six in Ireland and is home to rare species such as the Golden Eagle, Red Grouse and Red Deer is of immense biodiversity, landscape and economic value. The IWT surveyed four areas in October of this year where machines were being used to extract large volumes of turf on a commercial scale. There is also extensive illegal dumping of tyres and household debris within the boundary of the Park. New drains have been created, designed to dry out the blanket bog habitat to facilitate turf extraction. Blanket bog is a priority habitat under the EU Habitats Directive and the affected areas lie not only in the National Park but within zones designated as Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area. The IWT believes that this is occurring without any regulation or controls but has asked the NPWS to clarify this. To-date we have received no response. In addition, blanket bog habitats lie outside the scope of the much discussed Management and Restoration Plan being discussed by the Peatlands Council (dedicated to midland raised bogs only). read full story / add a comment

In the spirit of Internationalism and Anti-Imperialism, General Jamali-Paqaleh died fighting the lackeys of US Imperialism and Zionism. Brig Gen Mohammad Jamali-Paqaleh of the Revolutionary Guards was buried with full honours in Kerman. He had volunteered to "defend the Syrian people against terrorists" and "protect the [Shia] holy shrine of Sayyida Zainab" outside Damascus, the semi-official Mehr news agency said. read full story / add a comment |
