Unlike Jeremy Corbyn, Keir Starmer has never described Hezbollah as his friends. But other than that, when it comes to Israel there is now little of consequence to differentiate them, says Stephen Pollard.

The partial climbdown on medical cards for the elderly is deceptive: the clawback by Harney and her circling privatising vultures is to be the introduction of legislation to end automatic entitlement to medical cards for the over 70s - the means by which she will secure the same outcome as she did last week. She'll just have to go a bit more slowly at it than she at first thought.

If you live in the Clonakilty area come to the march tonight and register your feelings - speakers will include representatives from across the political spectrum - the march is not politically aligned in any way. read full story / add a comment

Good news for the Left and progressives in general today, when the FT revealed that 30% of people in Germany, Europe's biggest economy and the world's second* largest exporter, "attributed the financial market crisis to ... the 'failure of capitalism'" rather than "to 'abuses of capitalism'.

Or, as the Financial Times newspaper themselves put it: "Majorities in the UK, France, Spain, Italy and the US attributed the financial market crisis to “abuses of capitalism” rather than the “failure of capitalism”. The Germans were more divided, with 46 per cent blaming abuses, and 30 per cent saying capitalism itself had failed." read full story / add a comment

Yassamine Mather writes on the danger of a US/Israeli military strike on Iran over the next 3 months. She also criticises those on the "left" who criticise Iran but who fail to condemn US/Israeli Imperialism. Full text at link.

Over the last few weeks French president Nicolas Sarkozy has publicly suggested on at least three occasions that an Israeli attack might be imminent - and acceptable - unless Iran quits enriching uranium, and implied that in such an event the international community should turn a blind eye. In early October French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner said Israel was expected to launch a military strike on Iran before Tehran acquires a nuclear bomb. read full story / add a comment

Is the oil-rich Gulf of Guinea facing new US/UK intervention?

Thirteen years ago the Nigerian Government executed Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists. Their death brought the plight of their people and the role of international oil companies in Nigeria to the attention of the world. Since 9/11, Nigeria and the other oil-producing countries of the Gulf of Guinea have only grown in strategic and economic importance to both Europe and the United States. .........Andy Rowell “The Next Gulf”
