On 8 June 2009 Mr Justice (Sir) Declan Morgan delivered the judgment in the marathon Omagh civil case. The judgment delivery ended the year long hearing leaving more questions unanswered than answered with its content less than convincing. The burden of proof in civil cases is based on the laws of probability and in this case Mr. Justice Morgan stretched the probability rule well outside the boundaries. The judgment in its entirety contained multiple ambiguities and inevitably the defendants will appeal. One can only assume that Mr Morgan is a highly intelligent man by the very fact that he has recently been elevated to the office of Lord Chief Justice, however this particular judgment may come back to haunt him.

international / worker & community struggles and protests / press release Friday June 26, 2009 16:47 by Liz Chinchen
Workers from across London will be giving up their lunch hour today (Friday) to attend a protest outside the Iranian Embassy against its Government's harsh treatment of trade unionists, something which is feared will get even worse in the wake of the current street demonstrations.

Long before the current crackdown against Iranians disputing the recent presidential election result, the Government had been harassing and intimidating trade unionists. In Iran members of independent trade unions are frequently beaten up or thrown into prison. And there are concerns that attacks on trade unionists will increase as protesters look for other ways of demonstrating against the regime by taking part in strikes and other work-related protests read full story / add a comment

Yassamine Mather writes on the developing situation in Iran, on howdivisions are developing amongst the Mullahs and most importantly on the class composition of the demonstrations. Full text at link.

The problem with most dictators is that, even in their dying days, they believe they can stop the movement by simply passing orders or blaming ‘foreign powers’. Some supporters of the shah are still under the illusion that he was not overthrown by the 1979 Iranian revolution, but was deposed thanks to a plot by Britain and the US. In fact, as he went on speaking, attributing strange comments to Obama (the US president has apparently admitted in public that he had been looking forward to the demonstrations that have rocked Iran), one wondered if Khamenei, well known for using opium as a painkiller for his injured arm, had taken a double dose that morning. read full story / add a comment
international / worker & community struggles and protests / opinion/analysis Thursday June 25, 2009 14:33 by League for the Fourth International
For more than a week, Iran has been convulsed by mass demonstrations denouncing election fraud. Hundreds of thousands have repeatedly taken to the streets to denounce the government, which is now threatening, and beginning to carry out, a bloody crackdown. This time around, imperialist intervention is veiled: the White House feigns neutrality, the Western media go all out for the opposition, while in the background various agencies provide vital technical aid. In reality, all candidates in the presidential vote swear allegiance to the Islamic Republic, and the supposed moderate reformers are no less butchers and enemies of poor and working people than the conservative "populist" government. The situation cries out for revolutionary leadership independent of all factions of the theocracy, to wage a struggle for workers revolution against imperialism and clerical reaction. read full story / add a comment

Also present at this meeting were Irishman Dermot Gleeson who is or has been involved with Independent News Media, has recently resigned as Chairman of AIB and is chairman of UCC governing body since 2007 and another Irishman Peter Sutherland who is worth looking at on Wikipedia as someone who has his fingers in a lot of pies.
