international / rights, freedoms and repression / other press Monday August 17, 2009 14:15 by Mirian Cotton and David Manning   text 6 comments (last - friday august 28, 2009 18:59)
Mirian Cotton and David Manning piece in Counterpunch discussing how the “dominant media” in Ireland treated the Iranian elections and compares that media's handling of the elections in Honduras which occurred around the same time. The dominant media Cotton and Manning refer to is the right wing, corporate press. The Irish left wing media which took an identical ahmadjian-stole-the-election, pro green wave line to papers such as the Irish Times do not get mentioned in the article.

Capitalism is afraid to let the depression go its full course to thereby cleanse the system because of the potential threat from the working class. Indeed capitalism has become so contradictory that even a very deep downturn may not save it from deep stagnation. The cyclical downturn is now no longer sufficient as it would have been in the 19th century. Now we need cyclical world wars.

With a headline like that the story really does deserve a place in the "other press" section, no?

It's David Shayler again. For those who don't remember him, he was a MI5 whistleblower whose revelations included such delights as one of the general knowledge questions he was asked upon being recruited (put the English titles of nobility in order*) and that the Brits wanted to assassinate Colonel Ghadaffi back in the days before we spellt his name Qhadaffi. (with a Q).

Since the whistleblowing, was the exile with spy girlfriend in France, and then things got juicy. read full story / add a comment
