12,000-15,000 people marched through Dublin yesterday (September 30th) to protest at big cuts this year to community resources and the threat of massive further cuts.
The marchers are people living and working on the ground and they see the harm done, with worse to come.
"People live in communities, not economies," read one of the thousands of placards.
If there was a general theme running through the march, it was that people saw the Government as helping out ‘fatcats’ and developer friends at the expense of poor communities.
The next big COMMUNITY march - bringing in people from all over Munster – is due to be held in Limerick on November 5th (fifth).

Taking advantage of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's appearance at the UN in New York, thousands of Iranians from all across North America and beyond held two days of spirited protests against this icon of hate for many millions of their countrymen. They included a wide range of people, including many veterans of the 1979 revolution driven into exile, and U.S. and Canadian-born youth of Iranian descent awakening – and sometimes reawakening their elders – to political life. They also represented a broad range of political opinion, with a strong showing of forces identifying with the pro-Islamic Republic "Green" reformist opposition of presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi, as well as revolutionaries, communists and many others against both the Islamic regime and U.S. imperialism. read full story / add a comment

All good children are now washed and asleep in their cots and ought have little idea how their parents & elders intend to vote tomorrow in Ireland's 2nd referendum to ratify the Lisbon Treaty. Theirs is not the duty nor the concern to weigh local political and national debate with the long term consequences of a potential post-Lisbon European Union. For the most part they will have noticed the plethora of posters and the volume of bilge wash which the Irish voters have seen and been brought through since immediately after they voted No! in the first Lisbon referendum and which has continued unrelentlessly as a tsunami until this last evening of reflection.

The Green Party has lost it's mandate to represent the people of Ireland, and in particular, the environmental movement in Ireland. The latest scandal involves Gormley's own promises as Minister, to strengthen legal protections for national monuments and landscapes. In 2007 he promised new legislation the following year. Then it was promised for 2009, and formally described as The National Monuments (Amendment) Act 2009. Last week we informed by the Taniste that the bill will now not be published until 2010, at least. This is a core Green Party issue, and there is simply no excuse for the delay, which is costing Ireland's heritage dearly because of the high destruction rate continuing under the Green watch. TaraWatch is calling on all environmental groups to protest at the Green Party Special Convention on Saturday 10 October at 9.00am. read full story / add a comment

On Monday 28th September 2009, 18 Shell to Sea campaigners with strong links to the Rossport Solidarity Camp appeared at a special sitting of Belmullet District Court to answer charges relating to protests staged on land and at sea in May and June of this year at the Shell site, Glengad.

Six of the cases were adjourned to November 11th because of High Court proceedings initiated by those six, to have charges withdrawn. One other case was withdrawn by the state. One individual was convicted and fined, another plead guilty and had the charge struck out. Seven others had the charges against them dismissed. read full story / add a comment
