We have a ten-year window to act. As the megalomaniac G8 leaders meet in Germany, masked behind a barrier of fences and soldiers, intent on leading us further towards catastrophic and irreversible climate chaos, we must shout, scream and roar ‘no more’. Now is the time to take direct action and shut them down, them and their climate criminal industry friends! read full story / add a comment

Foreignpolicy.ie has learnt that only a limited amount of EU legal instruments will be translated into Irish despite the fanfare of Irish becoming an “official” EU language. A spokesperson for the Council has confirmed to us that regulation number 920/2005 only covers regulations adopted by co-decision. This means that laws adopted outside of co-decision will not be translated and importantly directives (one of the main sources of EU law), resolutions and decisions will not be translated.. read full story / add a comment ![]()

On December 3rd presidential elections will take place in Venezuela. According to all opinion polls available, 60% of the electorate will be voting for the re-election of President Hugo Chavez. During the seven years of his government the project of the Bolivarian Revolution has resulted in unique reforms in the educational system and the public health service, in the redistribution of more than two million hectare of land for the benefit of 150 000 families, and in economic growth with social justice. Among the poor popular masses a broad Bolivarian, anti-oligarchic and anti-imperialist movement has been emerging. This dynamic process to overcome the structures of the former system is reflected in the programme of Hugo Chavez, which means the sovereign development of the country opposed to US- imperialism, a participative people’s democracy and a new concept of socialism of the 21st century. read full story / add a comment

Today saw a historic joint venture into cyberspace by the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin who spent the day answering questions which had been put to him on the internet in a surprising joint project between the BBC and the Russian Government. Amongst the questions put to Vlad, were the reason why he lifted the t-shirt of a 6 year old boy during a walkabout earlier this week & kissed his stomach. Putin replied ""He seemed very independent and serious... I wanted to cuddle him like a kitten and it came out in this gesture. He seemed so nice,". Other human interest questions included one put by a 17 year old Russian girl who wondered at what age Mr Putin had lost his virginity. & of course some telly adicts had to ask about Korean missiles. Vlad outlined his worries for Russia and his pride. The project comes amidst a concerted focus by the BBC on russian affairs in the lead up to this year's G8 conference which will be held in St. Petersburgh shortly. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Available in four parts as a pretty high quality download here (for the first time I think):
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
The film had a complicated gestation but heavily involved the majority of the original Indymedia Ireland gang. We came back from working with Indymedia Italy in Genoa all fired up and determined to start an Indymedia in Ireland. Almost five years ago that was now. The film traces the events of the three days of protests in detail and poses the question - Was it all a setup? If Seattle was 'Star Wars' then this is 'The Empire Strikes Back'. It is made from a combination of footage of the Genoa protests against the G8 shot by 10 members of IMC Ireland, material from the Italy IMC Archives and material from various other sources. This compelling footage combined with on the spot interviews and reenacted voiceover commentary and analysis from various websites which were active during the protests provides a in-depth blow by blow retelling of the story of the three days of the Genoa protests against the G8. The film will be available on DVD in the run-up to the fifth anniversary of the Genoa protests. Watch this space for details. read full story / add a comment

I, like almost everybody I know, didn't predict the events of Saturday. In fact the only person I know who did predict a major riot was a friend of mine who happens to hail from the wee North - in retrospect I should have realised that he had his finger on the pulse, for not only does he have much more experience of sectarian marches, but through his job he knows many of the people who were involved and has an unusual insight and sympathy for those people who most Dubliners write off as 'scumbags' and 'knackers'. This article is an analysis of what happened and why almost everybody got it so wrong. This article is a companion piece to the photo essay which I published yesterday. read full story / add a comment |
