Take an anonymous Pentagon leak from a “high level military officer,” add an appalling lack of knowledge of history, and compound it with ignorance of special warfare tactics. This process describes the article published by Newsweek breathlessly revealing that a “desperate” Defense Secretary Rumsfeld is “considering” employing the “Salvadoran option” to thwart the “growing quagmire” of the Iraq War. read full story / add a comment

Abbeyshrule airfield has been upgraded. Runway resurfaced and military style numbers painted on both ends. Looks like there are plans to extend the runway and add bigger aircraft parking areas as part of a new development as the area is now fenced off.. Senator Feargal Quinn and his family have made an estimated €400 million gross from the sale of most of their holdings in the Superquinn supermarket group. Ideas and Ideologies – Davy Carlin 10/01/05 For, The Blanket, Indy media and Street Seen As an activist I have been involved in many campaigns over the last few years. From Anti Sectarianism, to Anti War, Anti Globalisation, to Anti Racism, Anti Privatisation to Anti Poverty and in each I have witnessed various movements, some mass, others less so. Nevertheless within each of them I had both seen and played an active part with others in initiating the coming together of not only peoples, Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter but of diverse organisations, groups and individual activists. Yet with all of these having been termed as being ‘Anti’ and against, what exactly then are we for. read full story / add a comment

In August 1984 the Dublin Governments Minister for Justice gave the oration at Beal na nBlath at the site where Michael Collins was killed by anti-treaty IRA men. Noonan told the crowd that they should follow Michael Collins as an example (I'm not sure if many of you are into selling out your country, but whatever floats your boat I suppose). During this speech he was also rebutting the legitimacy of the Provisional IRA however the question has to be asked, whats the difference? Many people claim the 'Old IRA' and the PIRA are completly different and chastise the PIRA at every chance you get and glorify the Old IRA when it suits. It is time for a reality check. Well lets look at Collins, the perfect example. read full story / add a comment

The island of Diego Garcia, apparently as vulnerable as many other islands in the Indian Ocean escaped without any casualties. It just happens to have a US Air Force base on it, which is directly linked to the US Pacific Command in Hawaii which knew about the earthquake hours before the tsunamis hit the islands shores. Even half an hour’s warning gives enough time to get away from the wave. As An expert on hazard research wrote in the Independent: “Forethought and practical action can make the difference between a natural event and a natural disaster”. read full story / add a comment

The Unlawful war in Iraq has killed over 100,000 people, and injured up to one million. Disease related to the war will kill even more. Who should pay for this huge liability? Given the level of human suffering it may seem pointless discussing compensation, but financial penalties may be one way of forcing the perpetrators of mass murder for greed and financial gain to reconsider what they have done. read full story / add a comment

As many Irish parents enjoyed their christmas giving presents to their offspring, I presume they felt secure that their innocence may allow them to grow, to enjoy "a good education" to become participative in their society, to the betterment of themselves.and maybe (hopefully) others as well. And on the way naturally rebellion. and little knocks. and studying hard or not at all. read full story / add a comment

A paper on the subject entitled “The origins of the Irish Travellers and the genetic structure of Ireland” concludes that “the Travellers are undoubtedly of Irish ancestry, due to their proximity to the centroid. Furthermore, the Travellers clustered with several heterogeneous counties in Ireland, including Wexford and Westmeath. Therefore, these data support that the origin of the Travellers was not a sudden event; rather a gradual formation of populations. Indeed, the Travellers probably originated with craftsmen and artisans forced to leave their monasteries (Crawford 1975). Later, their population grew as they were joined by various Irish groups that were forced to leave their homes because of various calamities and political upheavals (i.e. the potato famine and the repression of British occupation) (Crawford 1975). However, the timing of the Traveller origin is not certain and may have predated the historical period (e.g. Ni Shuinear 1996).” read full story / add a comment

WWI is perhaps my most morbid curiosity where history is concerned. Though one could argue that the beginning of the industrial military complex began with the American civil war, in which major advances in repeating arms, rifled barrels, and cannons were made, the carnage itself was not industrialized until what has come to be known as "The Great War." read full story / add a comment
