This week the minster of Justice, Michael mc Dowell addressed the Garda Siochana (his police force) on several issues. Improvements to their housing. What he terms "SF/IRA" criminality with very special references made to two events outside the jurisdiction of his department in Northern Ireland of the UK. And reminded everyone that he supports the GFA (to wash hands of ethnicity issues and crucify the Christ). Meanwhile the local "experts" on the Good Friday thing had earlier the same Dail holiday weekend spoken out against his policies. He made no reference to either speed lasers or the deportation of a young black chap in his school uniform to Nigeria last week. read full story / add a comment

The US occupation has damaged Iraqi civil society and infrastructure, fuelled terrorism and was carried out in the interest of capitalists rather than the Iraqi people. American capitalism has used the occupation to suppress workers rights and steal the natural resources of the country. Before the US invaded there weren’t any Islamist terrorist groups of any note in Iraq. Now there are, thus the secular nature of Iraqi society has declined under the occupation as secular forces are squashed between the Islamists and the US forces. read full story / add a comment

The weather is fluky here in Cooley today with rain and depression coming down. The following text may do something to lighten the spirits of indymedia readers. Some people think that The Archbsihop is just another venal cleric. Others may say that he is only a cod. However no-one can deny that he has in abundance the unusual gift of seeing what is (blindingly?) obvious. The following is a post factum reconstruction by Archbishop Michael Desmond ("Dessie") Hynes of a talk he gave to the fifth annual winter workshop organised by Cooley Environmental and Health Group. The mental health organisation Aware received 90, 490 euros in donations for the year 2003. They refuse to say how much of this money came from individuals with links or associations to pharmaceutical companies promoting the theory that depression is a real disease related to a brain chemical imbalance. It's important to note that these donations are separate from D.A.W.N donations, etc, and no breakdown is given. read full story / add a comment

The chemical industry council CEFIC took the lead, with German giant BASF in a key role, and with active backing from US chemical corporations and the Bush administration. First off, we've had the Hizbollah, pro-Syrian, pro-government rally, which according to various estimates attracted somewhere between 500,000 and 1 million people to the center of Beirut. Now, we have an opposition, anti-Syrian, anti-Government rally, with anywhere between 800,000 and 1.3 million people in the streets. At the European Social Forum in Florence in November 2002 a debate emerged within the alter-globalisation movement over whether building opposition to Bush’s global war was a diversion from opposing corporate globalisation. The debate - in terms of developing a strategy for the movement - is centred on identifying the key issue or challenge that the movement should focus on. "In eunte Verae" (if I remember correctly from my schooldays) is a Latin tag which means "With the coming of Spring." The weather has been kind and growth is in the air. But what I hunger for is political growth. Just watched a very interesting video from 'Anarchists Against the Wall' an Israeli group that pulls down/breaks open the apatheid barrier being built with the help of CRH amongst others. It covers the events of 26 Dec 2003 when one of their memebrs was shot in both legs by the IDF but more interesting the media reaction that followed and why this first shooting of an Israeli from a Jewish background by the IDF provoked such a storm. Very interesting in light of the reaction here to plans to pull down the fence at Shannon earlier in the same year. read full story / add a comment

Just in case you thought they had gone all soft and cuddly, heres an article from the current edition of the CPI publication 'Socialist Voice' justifying the Hitler-Stalin pact! Of course if you dare mention Stalin's crimes you are either a right-wing stooge or worse still an 'ultra-left'. Looking forward to their justification of the Moscow Showtrials.
