These are the illnesses you ought to have been immunised against as a child or as a teenager if you're female.

With the exception of tuberculosis these desiese are now controlled in the developed world. TB is returning and TB treatment centres are found in most eastern US cities and many European cities. I'll write about the new forms of TB in the fourth of this series.

are desieses against which many millions of children in the non developed world need vaccines.

Yesterday, the Gates foundation gave 750 million$ to GAVI the global vaccine alliance.
The donation was immediately supported by the state of Norway which gave $290 million, and this morning the UK has committed a further 750mil$ (=£400m) . These are comitments of annual support until the year 2015. read full story / add a comment

With the confirmation of two deaths from bird flu in Vietnam, World Health Organisations efforts to stem a pandemic of bird flu seem not to be working.

Last december Madrid's hospitals entered a small crises with the amount of flu victims (typical form), whilst Japan and China confirmed cases of bird flu amongst their poorest. read full story / add a comment

Government policy seems to boil down to a mish-mash of ideas about competition, privatisation - and really a dash of laissez-faire mentality about public services. However there seems to be a bit of old-fashioned loyalty to state enterprise and social policy generally. Have the PDs already produced - through their ally Charlie McCreevy - an irreversible and seismic shift in public policy. Or is the political pendulum beginning inexorably to swing back in the opposite direction? read full story / add a comment

The Indymedia newswire works on the principle of OPEN PUBLISHING, and according to an article by Matthew Arnison which is linked-to from the About us pages of Indymedia Ireland, that's like Free Software. It is and it isn't though. I think that if we made it more like free software it would improve the Indymedia project, spreading the good word. At a press conference in New York's plush Plaza hotel, David Lynch launched a $1 billion fundraising campaign to build 100 'peace palaces' across America, part of a plan for 3,000 buildings across the globe, one in each major city. Inside the palaces up to 300 devotees will spend their time meditating and 'yogic flying', which practitioners say is a form of levitation.
