The new government is set to continue the old policies; underfunding healthcare and creating a US-style, for-profit health system. This will only worsen the crisis and must be resisted. The current scandal here in Limerick of people having to travel long distances for dialysis underlines this.

For years now the government and HSE have been aware that the dialysis machine in Limerick Regional Hospital is over worked and that one or more new macines are desperately needed. They refused to act, putting costs before service. Now people are forced to travel to Tullamore, Kilkenny or Tralee a few times a week to recieve vital dialysis.

Concerned Citizens of Highfield in Limerick turn out to defend their natural heritage. Locally known as Chicken tree 1 + 2, are the old Monterey Cypress trees, the Giant Redwood and Turkey oak tree face possibly being felled.

Felling of younger trees occurred Friday and Monday on site, an act which is understood to be directly in breach of condition 6 of this developments Bord Planala planning permission (see condition 6 in full below).

Following today's pressure from these local residents and subsequent mediation with the developer and the council, a commitment have been given by the developer that all felling will cease until documents are sent to council. The residents expect the developer to honour this commitment.

More updates to follow.

In order to force wild animals to perform stressful and often painful acts, trainers use metal bullhooks, whips, muzzles and electric prods. These horribly cruel training methods are commonly used in Irish circuses all over the country. This is part of ARAN’s ongoing campaign country wide to show the public that, animals in circuses have being taken from the wild at some stage in their life for a lifetime of boredom, misery, cheap tricks and cruelty. read full story / add a comment
