Fr. Martin Newell of the London Catholic Worker community was sentenced to 24 days imprisonment Friday Dec 9th 2011 at Highbury Magistrates Court. Martin was brought before the court for refusing to pay a fine arising from cutting into the Northwood Headquarters/ London.

Today, Veterans for Peace, Catholic Workers, Occupy London and other anti-war activists gathered outside the High Court in London in solidarity with WikiLeaks activist Julain Assange. Julian has spent the past 363 days in England under house arrest without charge.
A secret U.S. Grand Jury continues to sit in Virginia pursuing indictments. Leading U.S. Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gringrich has stated "Julian Assange is engaged in terrorism. He should be treated as an enemy combatant." We believe the U.S., British, Swedish and Australian governments are planning to do just that!
We are all weary of the war which has now entered its second decade. We need to question the lies of our war making governments, defend the human rights and offer solidarity to those resisters like Julian Assange and Bradley Manning who are being defamed and pursecuted for exposing the nature of these wars in which our governments remain complicit read full story / add a comment

1. Wars have been the most terrifying phenomena people have confronted since the istant past. In our society, millions of Iranians have been living under the ominous shadow of the eight-year war with Iraq. The reminiscences of air raid sirens, damp shelters, overnight power cuts, nameless bodies, severed limbs, mothers who lost their children, children who lost their fathers, famine and hunger, homeless refugees and dozens of other frightening pictures at the back or forefront of our minds, vividly or vaguely, whether like a nightmare or a constant fear, is weighing down on everyone of us.

Cartoons have become explosive, underlining deep political fault lines in the new world order and more often than not, concealing bigotry and diverting debate from racism and imperialism to the much abused concept of “freedom of expression”. The latest episode was started by a cartoon published in Ha’aretz in which the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Minister of Defence Ehud Barak, say farewell to troops on the way to bomb Iran, while asking them to bomb the UNESCO offices in Ramallah on the way back. read full story / add a comment

A beefed up City of London police presence and deployed armed police greeted approx 15 activists demanding the freedom of Bradley Manning on the steps of St. Paul's Cathedral in London on "U.S. Thanksgiving Day" The U.S. Ambassador was attending the annual Thanbksgiving service at the cathedral along with a sizeable number of U.S. ex-pats. Hands Off the People of Iran unequivocally condemns the ratcheting up of sanctions on Iran in the aftermath of the much-heralded report of the International Atomic Energy Agency on that country’s nuclear capability on November 8. The report did little more than confirm the assessment that Hopi arrived at some time ago: that at worst Iran may be interested in the so-called ‘Japanese’ option. This is nuclear development that stops just short of the capacity to produce a nuclear weapon - but only by a month or so. But this is something that has been commented on many times before.
Despite the fact that this report contained little or nothing that was new (it was little more than a compilation of UK satellite pictures and the pre-existing reports of the CIA and other western intelligence agencies), imperialist leaders have fallen over themselves to express horror and outrage at these ‘new’ findings: read full story / add a comment

Louay Hussein a former political prisoner in Syria has more than a few doubts about the Syrian National Council. Hussein, a writer and political prisoner from 1984 to 1991, explains: “People who took part in the protests during the first three months were different from the people now,” he says. The original protesters “had political ideas and values and called for liberty and equality. They were for positive action . . . During this stage, I was part of the movement in the street, as an organiser. But others joined the protests. They regard this regime as murderers rather than a tyranny or dictatorship and raise harmful slogans” by calling for external intervention or executing Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.

On November 4th the main leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Army of the People (FARC-EP), Commander Alfonso Cano, was killed near Suárez, Cauca, in an operation of the Colombian government, with logistical and intelligence support provided by the USA. The small guerilla force of 14 people was hunted down by over 1,000 troops in a multitude of Arpía helicopters. The preceding months had also witnessed massive and indiscriminate bombardments in Tolima and Cauca, and a military blockade of the area, with disastrous consequences for the local population, thousands of whom were forcefully displaced. Britain passes its ten year mark in the war on Afghanistan, a war that has never had any popular support and presently has no end in sight. This year's Armistice Day 11/11/11 was hyped by the media into a compulsory red poppy wearing day as a form of loyalty oath to the war without end. Compulsory for all those in public life. The wearing of the red poppy may have begun as a "Never Again" sentiment, the government has attempted to hijack it as a recruiting tool in these long years of war. Footballers had the red poppy sewn into their jersies, the international friendly against Spain was tarnsformed into an electronic Nuremberg Rally by the televison conglomerates. Michael D is showing his true colours ahead of 2016 proving he does not deserve to be leading commemeorations for that event in history. Isn't it time to start organising an independent committee to commemorate 1916 and to boycott State activities? After all there is little to celebrate for this sorry Republic: a new form of colonial dependancy to international financial capital, a republic that surely does not cherish her children equally, which is a satellite of the UK, a westbrit elite sold out to the Queen and bankers. Veteran Irish Republican and Human Rights Activist, Bill O'Brien (Dublin and Donegal), takes on Former Fine Gael TD, Paddy Harte over the latter's promotion of the wearing of the British Poppy and the glorification of war.

War preparations against Iran continue. In the US, legislation, which includes sanctions against Iran's Central Bank and strict curbs on official diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran, was approved unanimously by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives.
The first bill, the Iran, North Korea and Syria Nonproliferation Reform and Modernization Act, would impose penalties against any individual or company – foreign as well as domestic – that has facilitated the transfer of equipment that could be used in Iran's nuclear programme. It also would bar access to the U.S. of any vessels that have visited ports of any of the three countries in the last two years. Among other provisions,the second bill would sharply reduce the president's authority to waive existing sanctions against any individual, company or country doing business with Iran; expand existing sanctions against companies that sell Iran refined petroleum to include any barter transactions; and impose sanctions against any individual, company or country that conducts a transaction with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which is believed to control as much as 40 percent of the Iran's national economy. Statement by CPGB-ML, October 2011 - Immediate publication Stop the War leaders are trying to stifle debate by illegally expelling those who criticise them - On 23 September, the CPGB-ML received an email from the Stop the War Coalition informing us of a decision by the "officers group" to "reject the affiliation" of our party. We were told that this was on the basis that the CPGB-ML had been "publicly attacking Stop the War Coalition" in its publications. We responded as follows: No basis for expulsion First: we have been affiliated for many years to the coalition. Therefore it is not now possible to reject our affiliation.
