Major hotel sponsoring live hare coursing and hosting big promotional event

category international | animal rights | opinion/analysis author Monday March 28, 2011 22:41author by Anti Blood Sports Report this post to the editors

Let's ask hotel to stop supporting the vile cruelty of enclosed live hare coursing!

Major hotel is both sponsoring live hare coursing events and hosting a big awards night aimed at enhancing the image of coursing clubs in Ireland
Live hare coursing, sponsored by Hotel Minella in Clonmel
Live hare coursing, sponsored by Hotel Minella in Clonmel

Please ask leading hotel to STOP sponsoring hare coursing and NOT to host coursing club awards!

On the evening of Saturday, April 2nd, the Irish Coursing Club will organize a gala event to promote the cruel and discredited so-called “sport of live hare coursing (see notice below).

The ICC Awards 2011 will be held during the club’s annual glitzy dinner dance in the plush Hotel Minella, in Clonmel, County Tipperary.
Apart from hosting this event that aims to glamorize an activity in which timid creatures are snatched from their natural environment and terrorized for fun, Hotel Minella also directly sponsors the cruelty.

Each year, the “Hotel Minella Oaks” features as an integral part of the three-day national hare coursing “festival” in Clonmel.
Obviously, the hotel believes it can benefit financially from supporting this vile blood sport. In doing so, it is completely ignoring the views and feelings of people who wish to see live coursing banned and the endangered Irish Hare protected by law.

Those of us who oppose cruelty to animals dressed up as sport can now make our views known to the hotel. Let’s appeal to its management to cancel the ICC Awards event and to stop financing live hare coursing!

Let them see that people who care about animals will think twice about ever setting foot in their hotel if it continues to sponsor the horrific abuse of one of the gentlest and most inoffensive creatures in the Irish countryside.

You can email the hotel at frontdesk@hotelminella.ie
Alternative, you can phone the hotel. The number (from within Ireland) is 052-6122388 or (from outside Ireland) 353 52 6122388.

I thought it was bad enough when Fine Gael pledged to bring back carted stag hunting a year after it was banned (following 30 years of campaigning by animal welfare groups), but now a top hotel is promoting hare coursing?? I certainly wouldn't give a red cent cent to a hotel that was actually propping up these disgusting forms of animal cruelty, let alone dine there or stay overnight. This hotel actually gives money to hare coursing, a sick perversion that is a CRIMINAL OFFENSE in just about every country that once allowed it.

Google "hare coursing" on Google news and see what comes up!

Shame on Hotel Minella! I wouldn't piss in its toilets if I was bursting. What is wrong with this country that we still have legal hare coursing?

Then again, we allowed far worse for a very long time. The Ryan report is gathering dust. Remember that report? There are some pretty sick people out there.

A lovely "rural pursuit" ...live hare coursing, as much a part of our glorious culture as the good old industrial schools!

You might want to check your facts and sources for this story?
The Hotel Minella ended it's sponsorship of the "Oaks" in 2010, the 2011 event was sponsored by "Greyhound and Pet World".

Very shoddy "journalism"

The hotel has sponsored the so-called "Oaks" part of the National Coursing Meeting for years and is still promoting and facilitating the bloodsport, as Saturday night's big event proves. Of course a clear statement from the hotel anouncing that its support for this horrendous activity has ceased, or is about to cease, would be welcomed by all animal protection groups in Ireland.

Interesting that the few photos you could attach to your article are obviously at least 10 years old.
You'd find more blood at your average GAA or Soccer match than you would at a Coursing meeting these days.
On a very rare occasions hares do get injured but 99% of the time the hares escape unharmed and go back into the wild in a much better condition than when they were captured.

The hare population in areas where there are coursing clubs managing and conserving the hare population is between 15 to 19 times higher hare than in areas, such as NI, where coursing has been banned. Perhaps instead of writing letters to hotels and newspapers and you might better off engaging in hare conservation measures.

So, in return for improving the health of a hare, all the coursing club asks is that it can terrify it by getting dogs to chase it (with the intent of killing it)?

Wouldn't it be better if these "conservationists" just (simply) improved the health of the hare, without scaring the wits out of it in return?

The pictures referred to are very relevant to the most recent hare coursing events because they show muzzled coursing and make it clear that muzzling of greyhounds doesn't work...it doesn't stop the cruelty. All the pictures shown so far are of hare coursing as currently organised.

Re Hotel MInella's support for hare coursing. They've also lavishly advertised that support and the evidence is there for anyone who doubts this.

Maybe the hotel will consider the views of people who DON't approve of terrorising hares for fun and give the coursers the boot!

The Irish Hare is a wonderful part of our wildlife heritage. Why on earth can we not appreciate and protect it instead of allowing more than 70 coursing clubs to ravage and torment these gentle creatures?

Pity they couldn't throw a few politicians and banksters into the arena of cruelty , my oh my
what i wouldn't do to travel to clonmel to see a spectacle if that were the case .

On a much sincere note this type of cruelty to lovely little creatures , great and small should not be allowed , The Hotel should be boycotted in future if this sordid event takes place .

The Savoy Hotel Limerick is also connected to hare coursing. They had an advert in the 2011 booklet for the coursing finals in Clonmel. In the advert they offered a "Special Rate" to people attending the Irish Cup hare coursing meeting.

Contact the hotel and ask them to disassociate from this cruel blood sport
