My defence(I landed up in court a few times) was that they(the advertisers) were broadcasting into public space and polluting it with propaganda so I had a democratic right of reply which was being denied by the mainstream.I got off with probation.(its still a better idea not to get caught).
My first shot back in the halcyon days of shoot-to kill was hitting STOP signs with The asSASsins under the STOP.On this issue I suggest a stencil with NAZIONISM for the STOPs, and whatever the ad suggests for the commercials.I see every ad as right wing propaganda and as such a legitimate target.Just be ready to defend your actions in court and dont expect any of those enthusiastic supporters and eggers-on to turn up on the day as moral support. Some may. Most wont.
Its dual purpose.Spikes the adman's gun, plus getting alternative ideas inserted. It dont pay to subvertise, but its good crack, and annoys the shit out of a lot of worthies.I also rediscovered the sgrafitti(sic) method whereby by scratching away a layer of poster(or three) you can find a contrasting colour that saves you paint and equipment(a stanley knife is ideal). Also, the letters of the advert copyline blurb can be ad-justed individually, so you start with THEIR clever creative shite and use that as petard for their own hoisting, giving,so to speak, a counter jangle to their jingle jungle.Another was the old Lotto ad with the lady of the manor on the pig's back playing off the muin na muiche of the seanfhocail. We just scrawled piggery under their uncaptioned hoarding.
Hope that makes sense. Its open season out there if you open your eyes.Target-rich environment at the minute.Go do some collateral damage to the fuckers' collateral. Before it sinks into a thirty-two county Ulster, which would suit all the wrong agendas, not least our securocracy.
Rinné mé agallamh le Críona faoi rún ag an chéad cruinniú miosúil do Nearfm i Halla na Cathrach ag tús na míosa.
I interviewed Críona for Nearfm about the motion at the first monthly council meeting at the beginning of the month.
pat, thanks for your input. Yes of course, I totally agree.
Thats why I said "amongst other grassroots activist meetings in the recent past"
I am not saying DCC are particularly targetting the IPSC etc. I think they are equally shitty to any activist groups putting up posters advertising meetings that rock the boat in any way at all. They don't seem to mind adverts from private businesses though. I guess they pay their protection money. :-)
Its worth noting that the motion was passed by the elected councilors. Its the administration headed by the appointed City Manager who impose fines on those who poster.
Has to be said though that these fines are imposed on all sorts of campaigns and one should not presume that the City Burocrats are Zionists.
This is a bit ironic considering the ruthless way in which DCC removed posters advertising anti Israeli actions amongst other grassroots activist meetings in the recent past
Does this mark a change of heart in DCC about supporting activism? Or is it just a bit of lip service PR about a foreign issue that costs them nothing and is no threat to the status quo in Ireland?
Maybe as part of their unwavering support for the flotilla and similar activism, they might do something even more concrete by undertaking, in future, not to interfere with activist posters advertising local meetings in dublin until after the events have happened.
