Photo Essay - Pro Life Rally and Pro Choice Counter Demo

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Saturday July 04, 2009 22:40author by Michael Gallagher - Photographerauthor email libertypics at yahoo dot ie Report this post to the editors

About 2,000 people attended the main rally, which was colourful, lively, loud -and a bit holy.

About 75 pro-choice demonstrators were as boisterous as the main rally passed them at the GPO.

I wish the pro-lifers and the right-to-choosers would stop their shouting matches (it wears out body and spirit on a sunny afternoon) and try to find common things to act on. For instance, when YD and others assert that Ireland is Pro-Life, could they indicate other areas of Irish society in addition to abortion where they find a widespread support for life?

Among the 'counter demonstrators' today were a collective of diverse feminists (RAG, choice ireland, lashback, and students against sexism). Out protest was against the hypocrisy of the so called pro life march, most of whom are more interested in shaking their rosary beads and telling women to 'close their legs' than seriously and compassionately dealing with issues surrounding sexuality and reproduction in Ireland.

As feminists we are very much in favour of life!

We are also very much pro choice and for us choice includes:

+ proper sex education in irish schools
+ free contraception
+ free childcare
+ improvements and choice in childbirth facilities
+ support for single mothers
+ no tax on child benefit
+ and yes, free legal abortion in ireland
