Remember the Hunger Strikers - Drimnagh

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Thursday November 13, 2008 15:00author by éirígí PROauthor email press at eirigi dot org Report this post to the editors

Public Meeting & Discussion

The recent release of Steve McQueen’s critically acclaimed movie ‘Hunger’ has led to a renewed interest in both the 1981 Hunger Strike and the broader prison struggle of the 1970’s and 1980’s.

This is the context within which éirígí has organised a series of 1981 Hunger Strike- themed public meetings which will take place during the month of November.

On Monday (November 17), St John Bosco Youth Centre in Drimnagh, Dublin will be hosting one such event.

The main speakers will be:

Tommy McKearney from Co Tyrone who took part in both the ‘blanket’ and ‘no-wash’ protest before joining the ‘first’ Hunger Strike in 1980. Tommy went for 53 days without food before that protest was ended on the basis of a deal which the British authorities quickly retracted.

Alex McCrory from Belfast, a republican ex-prisoner and former blanketman in the H Blocks of Long Kesh.

The details are:
St John Bosco Youth Centre,
Drimnagh, Dublin,
8pm, Monday, November 17th

Monday 17th Nov meeting in the John Bosco,Drimnagh was the best and most productive hour and a half ive spent in recent years.I am lucky enough to be living local but with hindsight i would have travelled to have experienced such an open and personnel account of that particular period in our history. Thanks to the organisers.

I urge anybody either living in Tallaght or within travelling distance to get to the next meeting in Killenarden next week,I will definately make the effort

Was present in Drimnagh on Monday night and surprised to see such a large crowd made up mostly by locals.Tommy McKerneys account of his experiences during the blanket,no wash protest and both the 80 and 81 Hunger-strike was entrawlling and taken together with my recent viewing of the film Hunger gave me a real sense of what those days must of been like.It was also good to hear Tommy expand to give a broader account of political conditions and events on the ground at the time which led to him and many others like him having to make serious life decisions which resulted in them ending up in Long Kesh.
Unfortunately Tallaght is too far for me but I will be urging anybody and everybody to take the time to catch the movie and the meeting in Killenarden next Wednesday.
