Photographers have been harassed and beaten up by the Metropolitan Police and this has continued with a poster campaign by the Met to encourage people to grass up anyone photographing in a public space. Photographers have subvertised back and are organising a one man protest, to be photographed.

Photo call – Press Freedom Protest! New Scotland Yard!

Restrictions on the right to protest have gone hand in hand with attacks
on those of us who cover protests. In recent months there have been
attacks on photographers, people have had equipment seized and access
has been denied. Police officers routinely stand in front of
photographers, hold a hand in front of lenses, preventing decent shots
being taken by deadline.

Our lawful right to do our job is increasingly under threat.

To highlight such attacks on the freedom of the media, NUJ General
Secretary Jeremy Dear will stage a lone protest outside New Scotland Yard:

Date: Friday 28th March 2008.
Time: 2-3pm.
Place: New Scotland Yard, London, S1.

Whilst the law puts restrictions on how many protesters and the nature
of any protest, photographers have a right to cover protests - lawful or
otherwise.

Yet that right is all too often being denied.

Show your support for the right to photograph protests free from threats
or intimidation.

A pilot scheme set to begin next month will see the Metropolitan Police taking a less restrictive approach to street photography in the capital by agreeing not to approach registered photographers.he police source close to the project told EPUK:

“RFID is a proven, cheap commercial technology that is used widely by supermarkets. We really don’t see why anyone who has nothing to hide will not carry a tag and we don’t forsee any objections from responsible photographers.”

“People already accept CCTV, safety cameras, ANPR, the congestion charge, tracker systems for cars and the tagging of offenders for probation. This is really no different.”

Photographers' rights protest at Scotland Yard

NUJ General Secretary, Jeremy Dear, will tomorrow (28/03) stage a
one-man protest outside the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police to
highlight the failure of law enforcement officers to protect media freedoms.

The union is frustrated that a large number of its photographer members
continue to be regularly obstructed from doing their jobs by police
officers who don’t understand the law around media freedom. The one-man
protest will aim to help senior police officers spot the difference
between a protester and photographers covering the protest.

Last year a set of guidelines on dealing with the media was agreed
between the NUJ and the Association of Chief Police Officers, an
extension of guidelines already agreed with the Metropolitan Police.
However, cases have continued to surface of police officers taking
action that is not within their legal powers. Most cases involve
officers obstructing photographers from taking photos and the
confiscation or deletion of pictures once they have been taken.

There are also examples of journalists being arrested, or threatened
with arrest, because they have refused to stop taking photos and in
other cases photographers have had their equipment seized. Many NUJ
members have reported being physically and mentally intimidated by the
police and some cases have included actual physical violence.

Photographers regularly criticise the police for their handling of the
media at major events, particularly public demonstrations where officers
often fail to draw a sufficient distinction between protestors and
members of the press who are reporting on the event.

Jeremy Dear will deliver a letter to New Scotland Yard highlighting the
union’s concerns and will stage his protest to help demonstrate the
differences between a protestor and press photographers. A letter from
the NUJ Parliamentary Group to the Home Secretary will also be delivered
to the Home Office tomorrow to raise the issue at the highest levels.

Speaking in advance of the protest, Jeremy Dear said: “It’s a shame that
we have to hold a stunt like this to help the police spot the difference
between a protestor and a press photographer. It really isn’t that
difficult.

“What’s really frustrating is that guidelines are already in place which
should deal with the problems we experience. We’re not even campaigning
for a change to the rules. All we want is for the policy that currently
exists to be properly enforced.

“Although the one-man protest is intended to be a little light-hearted,
this is a really serious issue. Police officers are preventing
photographers from reporting on important events with action that is at
times bordering on harassment. In an open and democratic society it’s
vital that photographers and members of the media are free to report on
what is going on in the world. Police officers need to understand their
responsibilities when it comes to respecting media freedom.”

Hey Free Thinker, the nightmare's already here. I've no doubt it's also recognisable as a form of fascism, the manifestations of which are appearing all around us.

The mother's a bit upset though about your allegations regarding her contribution to global warming and wants a retraction.

People have to wake up and realize that the loss of liberties ,''terrorism'' ,centralization of power ,the struggle against ''mam made'' global warming , wars and the emerging police state are all connected and are not by chance.
It is part of a massive agenda for a New World Order similar to George Orwells 1984 and Aldous Huxleys Brave New World. If people remain distrated by our entertainment saturated society ,mock political differences ,religion ,race ,nationality ,class they will carry on with their plot for extermination and control and you may find yourself one day living in a nightmare.

In classic Orwellian fashion, the Met’s ad campaign incites the general public to watch itself. It promotes suspicion and fear. Its headline, “Thousands of people take photographs every day. What if one of them seems odd?” seems calculated to appeal to that fraction of society that likes to appoint itself the guardian and judge of the rest.
