Galway IPSC : The EU colludes with Israel as Gaza is slowly broke on the Zionist wheel?

category galway | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Sunday February 17, 2008 14:08author by Paddy F. - Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign Report this post to the editors

"a terror of sonic booms that came every night and sent Gazan children mad" (John Pilger)

Yesterday, Galway IPSC took to the street to protest against the collusion of a spineless and conscienceless EU with Israel and to encourage shoppers to boycott Israeli goods.

Belfast based, David Morrison, who writes for the Labour & Trade Union Review puts the pertinent question in a Electronic Intifada article: "How is Israel able to strangle the Gaza Strip when there is supposed to be an international crossing between Gaza and Egypt not controlled by Israelis?" and then goes on to answer with telling detail that: "It was primarily through the good offices of the European Union (EU), which had a formal role in managing the Rafah crossing, that Israel always had a veto on the opening of the crossing. In practice, whenever Israel didn't want the crossing open, the EU obligingly kept it shut". http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article9303.shtml
Yousuf
Yousuf

Besides that, the EU (and its member states) in terms of the Geneva Convention, the UN and the International Court, has failed in its obligations under International Law, to challenge the crimes against humanity committed by rogue state, Israel, and the EU continues to turn the blind eye to Article 2 of the Euro-Mediterranean Association Agreement which obligates it to suspend the trading privileges enjoyed by Israel if it is in breach of human rights and continues to turn the deaf ear to the calls, two, of the European Parliament to take this action. Meanwhile, Israel's siege and closure of Gaza continues leading to shortages of fresh fruit and drinking water because there isn't enough fuel to power the electric water pumps more than four to six hours per day and the World Food Program is currently unable to provide 84,000 of its poorest dependents their full aid rations.

Meanwhile, the Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, is reporting that Chief of Staff, Gaby Ashkenazi, is preparing a major IDF assault on the Gaza Strip; a further turning of the screw and implementation of the "genocidal policies" agains the Gaza people ("ghettoized, quarantined, unwanted and demonized") that Israeli historian, Ilan Pappe has charged Israel with http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?ItemID=11882 For the Gazans, this is a further revisiting of Ground Hog Day where in 2005, after the 8,000 Israeli "settlers" in the Gaza Strip were relocated, Operation First Rain was unleashed where low flying F-16 Israeli fighter jets deliberately created sonic booms over the tiny coastal strip knocking pictures from the walls of Palestinian homes, compelling the residents to keep their windows open lest the pressure blow them out and in the words of John Pilger sending "Gazan children mad" http://www.johnpilger.com/page.asp?partid=475 and according to Sajida Srour, director of a kindergarten and nursery school in Gaza City making them scream and urinate on themselves when the thunderous claps ripped through the air. Ilan Pappe in the same article quoted above states that: "From 'First Rain' to 'Autumn Clouds' one can see escalation in every parameter. The first is the disappearance of the distinction between civilian and non-civilian targets: the senseless killing has turned the population at large to the main target for the army's operation. The second one is the escalation in the means: employment of every possible killing machines the Israeli army possesses. Thirdly, the escalation is conspicuous in the number of casualties: with each operation, and each future operation, a much larger number of people are likely to be killed and wounded. Finally, and most importantly, the operations become a strategy -- the way Israel intends to solve the problem of the Gaza Strip".

Israel justifies the ongoing collective punishment and proposed invasion/slaughter on the grounds of Hamas's and other Gazan resistance groups launching of Qassam rockets into Israel, chiefly into and around Sderot flying in the face of the fact, as it were, that Hamas offered a ceasefire several months ago and which was recently repeated.

What hope for Palestine then? bugger all, according to Pilger for the next uber-Meister of the country that backs Israel to an extraordinary degree and has the clout to muzzle it, if it willed, will be a chip off the old block, if not Bush, for: "John McCain, almost certainly the Republican nominee for president, wants a “hundred-year war”. That the leading Democratic candidates are a woman and a black man is of supreme irrelevance; the fanatical Condoleezza Rice is both female and black. Look into the murky world behind Hillary Clinton and you find the likes of Monsanto, a company that produced Agent Orange, the war chemical that continues to destroy Vietnam. One of Barack Obama’s chief whisperers is Zbigniew Brzezinski, architect of Operation Cyclone in Afghanistan, which spawned jihadism, al-Qaeda and 9/11".

After their travails, Galway-Palestine Solidarity Campaign activist, Treasa Ni Cheannabhain and daughter, Naisrin, will be returning to this city on Feb 25th after their successful humanitarian mission to Gaza where and, shortly afterwards, they will be the guest speakers at a public meeting organized by Galway Alliance Against War.

John Holmes, the UN’s top humanitarian official after touring Gaza last Friday has renewed calls for an end to the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip: "All this makes for a grim human and humanitarian situation here in Gaza, which means that people are not able to live with the basic dignity to which they are entitled. So what is essentially needed is an opening of the crossings, alot more goods coming in, humanitarian goods but other goods as well, so that people can start to live more normal and more dignified lives.”

Hamas spokesperson Sami Abu Zuhri is after stating that: “Hamas has confirmed that is has no objection to studying the matter (of a ceasefire) if the Israeli occupation commits to stopping all forms of aggression against our Palestinian people and lifts the siege that is imposed on our people.”

The headline in this thread is smearing and faultfinding as far as the EU is concerned. The EU is the best friend Palestine has in the international community and has contributed enormous financial and capacity building resources for years. Indeed it was one the earliest entities to do so. Pro Palestine advocates should give it the credit its due. One suspects that the mindset of those likely to become strident pro Palestinian activists is already very anti EU. Some of the names popping up to oppose the Reform Treaty are drearily familiar from the IPSC and other left wing activists’ causes.

Would it be the palestine of biblical reference you effed up a few days ago? Would it, keeping to the subject of the material (not something you ever do), be the territory called the Gaza strip which within the last month you suggested ought be annexed by Egypt?

Figures. Data. Facts. Citation. References. Hard cold Information is what you really need to include in your quotidien drivel. Needless to say you don't do that, because there isn't any such information available to support any one of your eructions.

The original poster doesn't let the facts hold him back. His 'contribution' is simply a regurgitation of the usual anti-Israel cant, liberally supplied with inflammatory slogans and headlines. As an exercise in ill-tempered, immature invective, it's actually quite good: as a piece of actually useful, even vaguely objective analysis - nulle points, I'm afraid.

Nowhere are we told why Gaza is having to be dealt with by Israeli forces : the mere incessant firing of rockets aimed at Israeli civilians - which is a war crime, nor the sending of suicide bombers to detonate themselves in israeli shopping centres - which is a war crime, nor the attacks and abduction of Israel soldiers guarding the border - which is also a war crime, as when abducted they are not kept in compliance with Geneva convention rules. Nor are we also told the obvious: that Gaza is being used by Iran as an unsinkable assault ship, as part of a strategy to destroy the world's only Jewish state - a state by the way that the glorious UN approved the birth of and continuing existence of.

The View from Space: I think you are missing anon's point. Yes, calling for adherance to UN laws and resolutions is not anti-semitic. Anon was inferring anti semitism of the whole protest from the percieved anti-semitism of the poster. While I feel the poster is certainly in poor taste and has touches of anti-semitic connotations, I feel that Anon is incorrect in drawing the conclusion that the whole protest was anti-semitic.

I did not called for the incorporation of Gaza into Egypt a few days ago and I supplied a link with the relevant statements and metrics so I don’t know what you are on about. This is a forum for independent comment not necessarily left wing/anti Israeli /anti American/anti EU/ pro IRA/pro Castro etc. It is not trolling to give an independent view of the Palestine issue that is at variance with what one might find on a west Belfast wall mural.

The posters on this thread are to merely wrong but the opposite of the truth. The EU is heavily and daily engaged in the Palestine issue, on the ground and with big bucks and enormous technical and other assistance. It is not standing idly by or doing had washing exercise in indifference. It is just false. There is not a shred of truth in it. And of course the ugly anti Semitic theme of some of the posters is apparent and should be condemned. The whole exercise is one in falsity, verbal skull duggery and general junk politics. All the more repulsive for involving very young people in it.

author by anonpublication date Tue Feb 19, 2008 15:30author address author phone Report this post to the editors

i wasnt making a point in regard to the nature of the protest (whether it was anti semitic or not).i was referring to the potus pilot poster a direct reference to the "jews killing christ" so popular with anti semites. I just dont see how this reference is applicable to a modern day protest without it having a slanderous conotations towards jewish people when your protest is against the state of isreal rather than a specific religion.

can you argue why this posters is relevant to this protest

author by Punch uspublication date Tue Feb 19, 2008 16:15author address author phone Report this post to the editors

I dont know if your directing that at me or not - but I can certainly answer your question. The poster is relevant in that the EU is doing exactly what the Biblical figure Puntious pilate did when he had a chance to show moral fortitude.

Washing your hands of something is a well-known idiom, it stems precisely from the moment in time when Pilate had the chance to intervene but had not the courage to do so. It is an exact parrallel of the EU in its position of responsibility to the Gazans.

Matthew 27:24
When Pilate saw that the could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

Make the relevant insertions above and you will see the EU washing it's hands of Gaza and turning it over to regional political players to be sacraficed.

You are wrong , anon.

author by Scepticpublication date Tue Feb 19, 2008 17:41author address author phone Report this post to the editors

The analogy is a crazy one. Pilate had ownership of the situation and power. The role of EU is limited to one of diplomatic facilitation, funding of programmes and the like and it does that. It is also just one party to the quartet and not a military power in this sphere. It is very much bound by law and it’s various Council mandates. The middle east in not within its area or a near neighbour unlike the Balkans. The EU is not responsible for the situation in the Middle East – it is a minor player that can help things along especially when they are going well and it has reasonable interlocutors. It certainly cannot do everything nor can it be said that it could be doing more. It has to respect the legal realities like the existence of Israel and work with them. It is more complex than a Galway IPSC poster might suggest. There is not a whit of validity in linking the troubles of Gaza to the EU. The EU is the party that has most genuine goodwill and largess for the Palestinians and least interest for itself in anything save stability. The sources of the problems lie elsewhere and not just in Israel and your totally one sided and indeed ignorant propaganda asserts.

author by Punch uspublication date Tue Feb 19, 2008 18:24author address author phone Report this post to the editors

It's not an analogy, it's an idiom.

author by Mr. Manpublication date Wed Feb 20, 2008 08:14author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Punch Us: While I feel anon addressed this, you seem to be missing the point. Yes it is an idiom that you can use. Jews killed Jesus, Pontius washing his hands of it. Israel killing palestinians, EU washing its hands of it. However, the anti semitic connotations are clear. This is anti semitic as Jewish does not equal Israeli. As I said, I am sure that this wasn't the intention, but it was certainly in bad taste. As Anon pointed out, the 'christ killer' label which is a favorite of anti-semites is a sore point for many Jews. And again, as Anon said, it has "slanderous conotations towards jewish people when your protest is against the state of isreal rather than a specific religion". The choice of material for the Idiom was just in bad taste. Other material could just as easily been used, but this was chosen.

And it seems to me that it is both an analogy and an idiom. An idiom because he is 'washing his hands' and an analogy because of the implied parallels.

author by Punch USpublication date Wed Feb 20, 2008 10:29author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Mr Man,

So your point seems to be that, if you like, you can construe anti-semtic connotations from that poster in this instance if you draw analogies from it and apply them in a way that might cause offence. In this instance however, the "implied Parrallels" are with the EU actions not Israel's.
If the poster had said :"The EU is turning a blind eye to a concentration camp." Then who would the sore point be with, the German's? You do know that is a sore point for Germany. In fact if you want to speak about the sore points, I can assure you the "Christ Killer" thing that you are overwhelmed with in this instance is a far more sore point with Christians than with the Jews. And for all your bluster , it is you who is turning everything on it's head just to find a way to get offended on behalf of the Jewish religious community.

In fact you seem to be completely missing the point.

The EU has washed it's hands of the Gaza Humanitarian crisis. That's a fact! Not a connotation or an inferrence . Why dont you debate that instead of deflecting the legitimate criticism away from its true target, the cowardly Institutions of Europe. Europe having a special responsibility for the region, in that it created the mess in the first place, should be finding this more of a sore point for itself than it appears to be.

author by Mr. Manpublication date Wed Feb 20, 2008 11:42author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Punch US: I recognise that the poster is directed at the EU. I am not missing the point, I deliberately didn't comment on it because I don't know that much about it.

The implied parallels are with both the EU and Israel, otherwise it would not be a parallel, no? I assume the context of the poster is that the Jews (paralleled with Israel) lobbying to get their way with Pontius (paralleled with the EU). This is further reinforced with the crucifiction reference. Again, I must state that I believe that any form of bigotry was not intended. Again, I must state that it only has connotations. You are correct as to the 'sore point' that the 'christ killer' issue is probably bigger with christians. This validates my point. It is because some christians have felt so strongly about this that they persecuted Jews. The difference in 'sore points' between the two is that Jews feel threatened, wheras Christians feel angry.

You are right that this debate only detracts from the intended issue, I just wanted to point out the bad choice in poster material. Primarily because little things like this draw focus away from the issue at hand, just like it is doing now.

This evening approximately 20-25 people created chaos in Marks & Spencer Grafton Street calling for the boycott of Israeli products from the supermarket shelves.
I support the right to protest but the manner in which this evenings protest was undertaken was truly disgraceful.
Prior to the banner drop, most of the members of the protest group had taken a trolley each, filled it up to the top with goods, most I assume being non-israeli goods, and lined up at each check out. Each one waited until the goods had been scanned and bagged and when asked for payment handed the cashier a letter of protest requesting that Israeli goods be removed from M&S. Trolleys and trolleys of food were abandoned - no doubt the contents had to be binned.

This action has done nothing in my eyes to help or work to address the conflict raging in Israel and Gaza. In fact the guerrilla tactics they employed spoke volumes for their cluelessness - seems they have learned the wrong lesson from those they are protesting against.

I suppose if you were a woman trying (in vain) to find a shop in Gaza that HAD any food you'd abandon your trolley a lot faster when the US-made Israeli bombs rained down on the street . . . .Though by now the number of family members you'd be trying to feed would have been greatly reduced as they disappeared one by one under the rubble of Israeli-destroyed buildings. And the Israelis have blown up the food supplies at the UN base just to make SURE you starve to death . . .
The terrible things people have to put up with in Dublin!
