SHELL'S MAYO PIPELINE GOES BACK TO LONDON -- Campaigners to deliver 200-foot pipe to Shell's global HQ in protest over gas giveaway --
Hundreds of campaigners from across Ireland will deliver a 200-foot pipeline at the door of Shell Oil's global headquarters in London on St Patrick’s Day to protest the giveaway and mismanagement of Ireland's natural resources. Organised by campaigning group Gluaiseacht, several busloads of people will gather at Leinster House in Dublin at 3pm on Friday, 14th March, to protest at the Irish government's inability to protect Ireland's oil and gas reserves. From there they will set off for a weekend of actions in London. "At a time of looming shortages of resources, we do not wish to see control of them in the hands of corporations whose only motive is profit,” said Gluaiseacht spokesperson, Brother Anthony Keane of Glenstal Abbey in Limerick. "The Irish people will not benefit from the Corrib Gas Project. We will have to buy back the gas from Shell at the ever-increasing international market value. As well as this, the project will destroy a pristine environment and thereafter the health and safety of the local community." Gluaiseacht spokesperson Treasa Ní Riain said: "What’s happening in Mayo could happen anywhere in the country now. Prior to this compulsory access to land was only granted to state bodies for public services, such as water and electricity. The law was changed to allow Shell, a private company, to access people's land without their consent. This precedent will mean that any private company can demand access to anyone’s land." “On a day when we as a nation should be proud to be Irish we are ashamed of our government and have been forced to take this issue onto the international stage.” According to an Irish Times poll on 22nd October 2007, 84% of people felt that the Corrib Gas project was not good for the local community. What is Gluaiseacht? Gluaiseacht is a non-hierarchical environmental and social justice movement bringing together grassroots organisations, concerned individuals and student groups from all over Ireland to take action on social, environmental and political issues.
The Bus costs €70 waged and €50 unwaged and will start from limerick and pick people up in Dublin. (If you want to come on the trip and money is a problem please contact us and we’ll work something out )
