USI says ban on gay marriage breaches human rights

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | press release author Monday October 02, 2006 12:45author by USI Report this post to the editors

The Union of Students of Ireland has said the lack of provisions for same-sex marriage in Ireland is a violation of gay people's human rights.

The Union of Students of Ireland has said the lack of provisions for same-sex marriage in Ireland is a violation of gay people's human rights.

The organisation is due to stage a formal celebration of same-sex marriage in Dublin city centre this morning to highlight the situation and to call on the Government to allow such unions.

The event is timed to coincide with the beginning of a High Court case tomorrow by a lesbian couple who want their Canadian marriage recognised by the Irish authorities.

The SU represent a tiny elite of the student body and appear uninterested in concerns that affect students as students. I wrote to the SU on a number of issues relating to conditions in UCD and they never got back to me.

actually i find the student unions to be quite mundane and full of socialites rather than real issue driven individuals.

But while you mentioned the gas bills did you notice ESB sponsoring age action week?

Now correct me if i'm wrong is'nt this an organisation which does very little to alivieate the basic problems that effect the elderly in our society? The week in question seeks to promote equality but i just find it very hypocritical to have a company which continualy raises electricity prices, for profit, and in complete ignorance to the plight of many elderly citizens.

When I went to college (Limerick RTC early 1990's) we had to pay a "capatation fee" each year which supposedly went to the Student union even though nobody ever asked me If I wanted to join such an outfit.

The SU was basically a drinking club (mainly for those destined to eventually drop out). Despite supposedly "representing" us there was only one election during the three years that I was there and that was a pointless farce.

There were NO elections to the board of the USI. Indeed the only function the USI appeard to have was to sell travelsave stamps.

Student politics is an even bigger racket than the politics that go on in Leinster house and dont give me that "1968" crap ! At least 99.9 % of those so-called revolutionaries went on to become part of the very establishment they claimed to oppose !
