Meet the woman so afraid of climate change she made her husband get the snip and refuses to have children. It's "selfish" to bring children into the world "when we don't know if it's going to exist in 100 years".

Have the Monaghan Hospital campaign Photos of todays protest?

category monaghan | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Monday September 25, 2006 16:26author by Anon - . Report this post to the editors

10,000 Doorsteppers.

There are reports on the radio that the Ceann Comhairle and Pat the Cope
Gallagher were unable to get out of ministerial cars to open the Monaghan
Bypass due to a convergence by the Monaghan Hospital protest Group.

10,000 people turned up for the ribbon-cutting and Ministers were stuck in
cars, One had handfuls of stones thrown at him.

The protest has been ongoing for some time, maybe a protestor could fill
in the history of the protest, the reasons for the convergence being
obvious.

The attempts by the State to centralise services in the area including the
shutting down of the Maternity services wherein women in Labour have to
trvel to Cavan general by Ambulance, led to the death of one infant.
The incubator was not switched on in Monaghan, at the time. Media
reports other cases that did not end so tragically for the families.
The protestors had kept up a vigil out side the Taoiseach's Dept in Dublin
for some months during the winter months a couple of years ago.
The protest today, at the scene of the Bypass opening was in response to reports
of the imminent closure of hospital services in the region.

Other hospital rationalisation /centralisation programmes have led to the
accquisition of the site for the new Children's hospital on the Mater site
which protestors claim has not the correct infrastructure or land -mass
to provide adequate services for the proposed scheme. It is in close
proximity to the site at Mountjoy soon to be sold by the Dept of Justice.
Allegations of improper processes in the land accquistion are being investigated
at the moment.

I was there. It started off nice and quietly, then a bus carrying local politicians got a bit of stick, but nothing more. Then a bunch of kids from the Blayney end decided to go through the barriers, and the Emyvale road side decided to meet them on the roundabout. We then had a load of schoolkids running round the middle of the roundabout with a few banners, and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed. {eadar McMahon was then trying to get people to go back behind the barriers, which they were beginning to do until a certain Ceann Comhairle barged onto the scene.
The "trouble" was all due to O'Hanlon deciding to make an impromptu visit, without telling anyone in advance. He then decided to get out of his car and parade round like he owned the place. "Representing his constuency", when he hasn't been seen north of Carrickmacross in the guts of 20 years. Considering this so-called Monaghan man did his best to shut down the hospital during his tenure as Health Minister. There were a handful of pebbles thrown at him, twice, and someone threw a lump of mud, that was it. Lots of shouting and a bit of jostling, not much else.

Barged in cos Pat the Cope was interred in his hotel room....

Pat the Cope was due to unveil the thing. Maybe people want community
and not sell-out, sell-off. The foisting of a corrupt syttem in the form
of a consultative process-a relentless and profitable landgrab?

The roads are the work of profiteers and re-zoners and the really sad thing is
that they really don't give a feck about community needs , just personal enrichment.

The other sad thing is that they try to convince them that a road is more important
than basic health services and paying (mostly) the toll is good for the SUV user,
when it increases asthma, stress and other related illnesses.......

Tis called highway robbery.
