"More Propaganda Than Plot" - Former British Ambassador on Alleged UK Terror Plot

category wexford | rights, freedoms and repression | other press author Sunday August 20, 2006 22:40author by Michael K. - IAWM Report this post to the editors

"The timing of the arrests has been deeply political and should be viewed with skepticism"

"There’s, as you've reported, no sign that the people had plane tickets. It's very difficult to bomb a plane without a plane ticket, no sign that they’d actually made any bombs yet. And the evidence is that these people had been under surveillance for quite a long time by the British Security Services, who hadn't seen any need of the early arrests ...

And then a combination of some new intelligence coming out of Pakistan, which it seems very likely was got under torture -- it was certainly got by interrogation by Pakistani intelligence services -- and pressure from United States officials has led to this, to the arrests, still nobody charged, and the most enormous political propaganda being made of the case".

In his latest column for the New Statesman, John Pilger powerfully writes about the alleged plot to blow up airliners flying from London and says that "unimaginable mass murder" has already taken place -- in Iraq -- and that the real threat the British face is in Downing Street. (three extracts below) :

"Blair’s extremism, like Bush’s, is rooted in the righteous violence of rampant Messianic power."

“We must use terror, assassination, intimidation, land confiscation and the cutting of all social services to rid the Galilee of its Arab population,” said Israel’s founding prime minister, David Ben-Gurion.

"By any measure of international law, from Nuremberg to the Geneva accords, Blair is a major prima facie war criminal."

The findings will shock many at Westminster who had expected Labour to gain ground following John Reid's high-profile handling of the alleged plot against transatlantic airlines. Carried out over the past weekend, following the series of terror arrests, the poll shows voters do not believe the government is giving an honest account of the threat facing Britain. Only 20% of all voters, and 26% of Labour voters, say they think the government is telling the truth about the threat, while 21% of voters think the government has actively exaggerated the danger.

A majority, 51%, say the government is not giving the full truth and may be telling less than it knows. That finding comes despite a newly introduced system of public information warnings that saw the home secretary downgrade the threat level from critical to severe.
