The BBC is a hulking anachronism, says J. Sorel. The last of the great Departments of Information, a relic of an age of siege and conscription, sprawled across the national psyche like a huge rusting battleship.

Galway's only community radio show axed from student community radio

category galway | arts and media | news report author Monday September 19, 2005 23:55author by Radio Listener - indymedia, Galwayauthor phone 091-750445 Report this post to the editors

Operating for three years the highly varied Earth Show or Clar an Domhain has ceased broadcasting.

It came as little surprise to those involved in the programme's creation that as and from now the environmental/Gaeilge/Community open access radio show has completed its latest broadcast on Thursday last at 6pm.

However there was a sense of hostility felt by the volunteers who for six years had been involved at almost every level in the station's running. Then in 2002 volunteers felt that Galway and indeed the island lacked a radio station culture that provided a distinct open resource for those that had heretofore been denied any voice to the general population. Two students:one from GMIT and one from NUIG created the Earth show and began broadcasting oftentimes sensitive material. A space where local comedians could produce and broadcast was created alongside poets, writers, musicians, Travellers, victims of state sponsored abuse. Indeed the show became quite a focal point for many local and national organisations from charities to issue-based groups and a welcome drop-in soap box for those with something to say, sing shout or rant. After some time the show was a solo operation whose producer now felt that in the spirit of 'Think Global Act Local' should be brought into practice and the Earth Show became a bilingual production under the name; Clar an Domhain (the progamme of the world)...............

The answer for this kind of thing is obvious.

This is quite a pity really. I remember being down in NUIG once and being taken into see the studio. It was a novelty to see the news being read straight off Indymedia in front of me.

This is proof if ever there was that once a dissenting voice becomes popular, it is time to shut it down.

Clearly in comparison with the rest of our radio landscape, this was the only real beacon and the fear was that it would expose the facade of so called free speech on them.

Nope it's alright for a few individualls to see through the system, but when the potential is there for thousands and possibly tens of thousands then it's time to pull the plug. I mean it could spread like wildfire and people might start waking up and demanding control over the own lives and communities.

It's kinda of why pirate radio also was okay for a while because they didn't say too much except play music, but as the 90s arrived and the copyright boys realized they were loosing potential revenue, then they had to go too.

It would be interesting to know the exact background/rationale for closing the station.

Could someone from Flirt FM post the reasons behind the axing of the show? Or could the original poster tell us why they feel a community radio station would axe a popular talk show. Under BCI rules, community stations have to produce a lot more talk-radio than commercial or state broadcasters- this is the most difficult type of programme to resource and source so i know if a show was dropped it must be for some pretty serious reason or set of reasons.

More information please???

After beiong an award winning station year after year.

Freedom of speech and freedom of expression is a right, guaranteed under the constitution.................until it becomes effective. Galway radio must have been telling some truth, they describe as 'sensitive'.

Sorry Paul,
but North West was a commercial station, set up to make money for its owners, which it did very effectively, perhaps you should go and ask them why after so many years on air their studios were still 100% inaccessible to wheelchair users???

Flirt FM is a community station and is bound to operate not only within the rules set down by the BCI but also within the guidelines of the AMARC charter which sets down the ethos of community stations all over the planet.

I too would like to know why this programming decision was made, but don't confuse this issue with one that relates to the tendering process for a commercial licence.

The cancellation of the show was alledgedly due to failure to meet talk/music content.. And whilst there may be an element of truth in this the fact remains that most of the programming in the station falls short of the demands. In fact the Earth Show was the only show broadcasting Gaeilge for manys the week and if one researches the stations overall output there is very little if any Gaeilge output. Indeed many Earth shows were composed entirely of speech such was the nature of many of the interviewees. Also without naming names I will state that there were many radio programmes that were left abandoned for weeks at a time and boring repeats were used to 'fill-the-gap'. To the best of my Knowledge very little disiplenary action was taken and very rarely would a broadcaster be informed through email that their show had been cancelled due to talk/music content.
more to follow........

I'm very sorry to hear that Galway Community Radio has ceased broadcasting. I am a volunteer at Cavan Community Radio and the people I met there initially had a very high code of ethics regarding community radio. It's for everyone and is inclusive - Furthermore it connects communities all over the county and gives THEM a voice. I, however see strange elements infiltrating our communities and they bring a hidden agenda... They have weird philosophies and while appearing to want to empower people they actually tie them in with THEIR plans.
