Make FGM grounds for asylum The Irish government is currently trying to deport women and children under the threat of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), which frequently results in death. Asylum in Ireland can be sought on grounds of religious or political persecution. However the government refuse to acknowlege FGM as a political act and therefore women and children cannot apply for asylum on the basis they have suffered or will suffer FGM if deported. Unlike other European countries Ireland does not have legislation to protect these as FGM is not strictly prohibited under Irish law. This urgently needs to be addressed and Comlamh and well known Professor of Law Ivana Bacik presented draft legislation to the previous Minister of Health but this was not acted upon. The current Minister of Health Mary Harney seems to be taking the same atance on the proposed legislation as her predecessor. |

she has been ordered with her two daughters to a centre to await deportation.
RTE spin says that the minister will not probably look at it as he is busy with
'branding ireland'.
How branded can it be when the head of the UN wants to see less violence against
women and measurable reform in the areas of safety and protection?
Lenihan has not reformed laws that his predecessor made.

Where are the spokespersons for all of the various womens' groups? Have they lost their voices?
These deportations are anti-woman actions by the Irish state. Is the Minister anti-woman?
Violence.
The dept of justice does not employ gender aware officers who are trained in trauma counselling.
they never have, they have a road-map to gender equlaity but that is for rich irish women
who are literate and do not see the poverty on the streets.
NGO's should be collating evidences of justice dept lacks in the area of protection
especially to do with gendered violence and fgm.
sure we can all wait a day or two until the minister returns from selling what is left of ireland
to foreigners with money and while his counterparts beg for irish illegals to be treated with
dignity.
he might even consider root and branch reform of asylum and protection.
the UNHCR printed a 14 page critique of our asylum system and it made horrid reading.
Why are FF in power, is it their closeness to the fourth estate that allows nasty and lazy
policy and brutaility be normalised so a tiny % of the electorate can abuse other's rights
in their wealth-making?

(find rape and trauma counsellors on this site, y understanding is that DRCC volunteers
to the work of the government without expert group input nor pay)
=prove me wrong...
The UNHCR has meanwhile published a 14 page critique of Irish policy on
Immigration, residence and protection bills. these were drafted by Mc Dowell in2006.
Now FF are into smooth power transfers and a revolving chair system.
Minister Lenihan has not looked at the problem's with Mc Dowell's laws and has not
sufficently separated himself from a policy (much like Gender equality lip service) that
is proven to be anti-human rights.
This government will not change.
All decisions on immigration are down to one man. he does not seek NGO advices
nor does he employ Trauma Counsellors.
His cohort in FF (Leyden) has refuted the EU's rights on decriminalising abortion
based in the constitution.
FF do not give a fuck about the rights of women and children. ask Lenihan what was
said to him in geneva about children's rights.
Well done Pamela for winning review on the subsidiary protection order!
Is this the same lady who was the subject of the news report below .
Because if so, her claim for protection under the Geneva convention looks very flimsy indeed!
“It is understood the State will argue in the courts that Mrs Izevbehkai had multiple visas to enter the UK between June 2004 and June 2005.
She arrived here in January 2005 using false documents and would not disclose the source of the documentation, according to the State.
When arrested last January she gave a false name initially and did not reveal her real identity until she was being held in Sligo garda station”
