Bob Dylan does deal with Starbucks

category international | consumer issues | news report author Wednesday June 29, 2005 18:20author by Gaz - -(A)- Report this post to the editors

singer/songwriter legend Bob Dylan has signed an exclusive CD deal with Starbucks.

Dylan: Live at the Gaslight 1962 will be sold exclusively through starbuck stores in the US. Starbucks are notorious for their anti-worker/union policies.

Last year dylan released an exclusive compilation CD through lingerie retailer Victoria's Secret. Bob also appeared in one of the their tv ads cavorting with scantily clad women. Feminist groups have consistently hit out at victoria secrets ad campaigns claiming that they objectify women.

"Advertising signs that con you
Into thinking you're the one
That can do what's never been done
That can win what's never been won
Meantime life outside goes on
All around you"

1965 song "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)." - dylan

Bob Dylan is simply the American answer to Bone-Head of U2 and "Sir" Bob Geldoff.

All feeding at the troughs of the corporate music empire and willing to sell out for an album.

Fuck em all.

In retrospect, Bob Dylan is typical of many of the white, middle-class "counter-culture" here in the US. All talk, no action.

To quote Emmett Grogan from his book "Ringilivio, A Life Played For Keeps" the hippies were middle-class twits who came to San Francisco to play and have an adventure in poverty in their love ghettos. Once they were done, they scaled the walls, climbed back to suburbia and became stockbrokers.

Exhibit A. The Anti-War Movement squeaking like frightened mice around John Kerry.

Bob Dylan is simply a logical extention of that political genre.

The answer my friends is a flowing in a Starbucks, the answer is a flowing in my coffee......

Starbucks is also notorious for great coffee, good service and nice clean stores. The sooner they get them opened here in the Republic the better. We can all get a decent cappucino and some music too.

Brendan,
Yeah and Shannon Airport is well known for friendly service to US military flying to slaugher Iraqis in a brutal, immoral and racist war fought for Oil Corporation profits. Oh yeah and with the recently revealed Downing St Memos, based upon a lie.

I can assume that Brendan does not support Unions and likes Bush and the war. Probably living in Rathfarnham and "grooving out" on U2 albums......

Wasn't it Starbucks that charged the firefighters for water on 9/11 that was needed to help the victims? Another multinational company trying to make a profit out of a disaster!

Nothing new with Dylan. Here are two things I wrote on the wannabe radical.

1994, Jan 22nd: Bob Dylan allows the Times They Are A Changing to be used in an advertisement for a firm of New York accountants. Surprisingly enough, he has been accused of selling out in allowing this appropriation or misappropriation of the 1960s anti-establishment anthem. The times they are indeed a changing, so why should Robert Zimmerman be obliged to remain the same. The move will be a welcome salvo to those who would contend that ideology is at an end. It is a pity though, to see the betrayal of an ideal, even if it was only openly identifying itself with loose and vague notions of social justice. What can be said? The symbolism is more powerful than any possible comment: all rhetorical aces have been trumped in this particular joust.

[That text is unchanged, but I certainly don't share the Fukyama - more in the spirit of C. Wright Mills.]

2004, December, 16th: Lisa Marie Presley sells her father Elvis’ estate to Robert Zimmerman (Bob Dylan) for $100m.

[that one's about bad taste as much as too much money].

Its so disappointing to see one of my music heros sell out to the beast himself...it feels like everything Dylan has ever said or written has lost its meaning.. I'm very sorry for the time i spent respecting you Mr Dylan.
