Information for Irish women about abortion services in the UK and Europe

Published online by the Alliance for Choice http://www.struggle.ws/ireland/choice/index.html

Introduction.

This website has been set up by pro-choice activists to provide Irish women information about abortion services in the UK and Europe. Abortion is illegal in Ireland and because of this thousands of Irish women travel to the UK every year. The Irish Government, under the 1995 Information Act, severely restricts Irish people's access to information about abortion services abroad. Abortion information is only legally obtainable as part of face-to-face counselling. It is illegal for a doctor to refer a patient to a clinic in Britain, even if her health is at risk. We believe that the 1995 Information Act should be deleted in order that women can obtain information easily and with anonymity. Choosing to have an abortion is a very difficult and emotional decision for a woman to make. If you are in a crisis pregnancy situation, you should consider all the options available to you - parenting, adoption and abortion. We are not advocating that women experiencing unplanned pregnancies should have abortions. We are simply providing information that can help ease the stress and emotional strain the Irish government inflicts on Irish women by not making information easily available. We have no connection with any of the groups, organisations, companies, clinics etc... listed on this page.

Before you make any decision, consider all your options....

If you, a friend or family member is in a crisis pregnancy situation the following agencies can offer you advice and counselling. The 3 organisations listed below offer non-directive counselling sessions which means that they will talk openly about all the options available to you - adoption, abortion and parenting.

I am grateful to the people that have this website and believe it to be shameful that a GP cannot refer a woman to a clinic in the UK for termination even if it will effect her health. Although I am pro choice, up until reading this webpage, I was very uneducated. I am eighteen and my best friend is pregnant..... I didnt reaslise it was so difficult to attain information. Thank You for the help. David

And how often is abortion used to cover up incest? Quite a bit!

author by Saoirsepublication date Sun Aug 06, 2006 19:23author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Maybe abortion is sometimes used to cover up incest - but so is adoption and all kinds of other strategies. The best way to combat incest and sexual abuse generally is to give children and young people as much information as possible (suitable to their age or stage of development) about sex, sexuality, their right to say no etc. But anti-abortionists oppose sex education, even the Stay Safe programmes in schools which are really just about building a child's confidence to be able to say no to adults.

p.s. I do think it would be better if the website had a straightforward address like abortioninfo or something - this address is too long and won't be remembered easily. I know such addresses cost, but only about £50 a year which I'm sure could be raised easily enough.
