Church leaders are too quick to condemn Tommy Robinson and the Unite the Kingdom march, says Chris Larkin. We don't know what Jesus would have made of our politics, but we can?t just assume he?d have been a Lib Dem voter.

Living in a sick society

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday July 26, 2003 15:09author by rooster Report this post to the editors

LAST year our Department of Health spent more than £300,000 on the Irish language. Now that's what I call really sick. But this was a policy instigated by a Sinn Fein Minister.

Therefore, for any of the rest of us to suggest it is a complete waste of good money which could be better spent on the needy would mean being labelled a bigot.

Which is why the media and our political representatives are so coy about condemning it. How sick is that?

Spending Health Service money on Irish is just another symptom of how badly our community is gripped by terminal symbolism.

It's not even a question of "think of all the operations £300,000 could have paid for."

Just think of all the Irish text books it could have bought for schools. At least then it wouldn't have been such a shameful, sickening waste.
