Kill the Revolution!

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Friday June 13, 2003 16:02author by Nicola Murray - SOSauthor address Cork Report this post to the editors

PARTYING THE SYSTEM TO DEATH

There are a number of events planned for the 21st June at Shannon airport; SOS, the National Demo and the Pitstop Ploughshares / Catholic Workers event, all generating a fair amount of controversy in the run up to the solstice. Nicola Murray muses on the significance of the SOS movement.

A critic of SOS wonders if its supporters really believe that they can “party the system to death”. His position, along with SOS’s other detractors, is that we can only march to peace. But what if the only route to peace is to kill the revolution as we know it? Kill, in this context, need not be thought of in negative terms: it can be seen as a kind of benevolent destruction, like the way the Hindu Goddess, Kali, destroys demons that would otherwise run amok, harming humans and divinities alike. Maybe the revolution as we know it is being used against us; used to entrap us in a dichotomous paradigm. What if we are being tricked into reacting rather than acting? Tricked into unconsciously imitating that which we wish to abolish. If this is the case, then even when the revolution succeeds, it can only bring us back to where we began – as the word revolution implies. SOS wants to break the cycle altogether; to kill the revolution. But how? By partying the system to death? Yes! By connecting with each other at events like SOS, cultivating friendships that transcend communities, nations and continents, we can transcend the “us v/s them” model of war and resistance. We can change the course of humanity from self-destruction to self-realization; the realization of the unity of all things. Indeed, there may be no other way to peace than to party our way there.

RECLAIM THE SKIES!

This was all done in the sixties man!

I have to say, this avoid conflict stuff really annoys me. What are peasants in Columbia supoosed to do - hold hands with their enemies (capitalists and drug merchants)? What about low-paid workers in Ireland? Should they give up this protest malarky and embrace their money-grabbing scumbag employers. Fight back, and fight back hard! That's my creed anyway. Sure you mean well but what's posted above is a recipe for wishy washy middle class twaddle. Naive to say the least.

I think SOS will complement the march, its not either or. I dont think we can party the system to death but lets boogie as we battle.

Anyway Nico is just putting forward her opinions. I dont think I will (horrors!) be turned into a pacifist by SOS.

Go for it Nico "Cynicism is the 5th. column of the establishment"...our disarmament was a dance.
See you on the 21st.

How many times does this have to be said? The anti-war movement is not a peace movement, though it happily accomodates people like Ciaran and Nico. I want to tear capitalism to the ground and am proud to call myself a revolutionary anarchist! Fuck the capitalists! Fuck the State! And fuck middle-class types with their social partnership/co-existence bullshit!

NO WAR BUT THE CLASS WAR!!!

If you think you can achieve anything other than personal enjoyment whilst high and dancing more power to your optimistic elbow.
However, while you dance, your enemies hatch new and evermore effective ways to turn your brain into pliable squid-puke.
You should be assassinating fat cats. Then ,by all means ,have yourself a boogie.

Who said the movement was pacifist? They were just putting forward their opinion.

Having said that though, I do think we should stick to non-violent direct action.Theres no need for violence against people (or animals) in this campaign.

Are there any flyers or posters anywhere for the SOS gig?I see there are some from the anti-war movement but they don't have anything about the carnvial type events- just sounds like another anti-war march, which I thought this wasn't!!

What's happening, where and what time? Where I live the chances of me seeing one of theese posters or flyers are very slim but I've travelled to most of the Shannon demos independently and I'd love to know the details so i can organise myself Thanks

National demo at Shannon will assemble at the town centre at 2pm on Saturday, 21 June. Will be joined by Catholic Workers who will walk out from the airport where they will vigil at 12pm.

Demo will march on the airport. Rally by the terminal with three speakers and then an open mike. Music also. The SOS gig will be setting up as the rally progresses and people will be able to fall back to that for an all-night boogie.

long is it going on for? Is it worth leaving Dublin at 2?

author by Nico - SOSpublication date Mon Jun 16, 2003 12:58author address Corkauthor phone Report this post to the editors

yes, it is definitely worth leaving dublin at 2. no matter what happens with the guards at shannon, we will have contingency plans so that all those who want to party all night will have their wishes fulfilled.

peace fairy, i'm sorry that i don't have posters sent out, but please feel free to make use of the SOS logo that is now on the front page to make your own posters. thanks for your help.
