There is not one word on his literature about his position on abortion, civil partnership, his opposition to gay rights in general, his opposition to sex education. Not one word about religious values. No reference to his support for the Iona Institute and the right wing economic policies of its director David Quinn (overspending on public services was the problem)

His Brief CV makes no mention of his period as sec to archbishop Connell. He is only for adult stem cell research etc

You would think he was a soft-hearted liberal!

When will he come out as a catholic extremist? read full story / add a comment

SUMMARY: If the State, in the name of the Irish people, prosecutes you wrongfully or maliciously, and the State loses, you can sue for damages. When you are good and ready to go ahead, the State can send you a letter ordering you to appear in another court where they will ask another judge to strike out your case. The reasons given are usually that your case is "vexatious" or "unlikely to succeed". Or if you fall ill and under doctor's orders, the reason could be "for want of prosecution".
Kevin Tracey's six cases were struck out by the President of the High Court on 4 March last. His doctor's and hospital consultant's certificates were deemed by the Judge to be inadequate. He is allowed to "appeal" to the Supreme Court but as a lay litigant who is still under doctor's orders, the odds are stacked against him to carry through or win such an appeal. read full story / add a comment

Shatter condemns criticisms of judiciary in wake of tribunal

The Justice Minister Alan Shatter has hit out at what he has called "intemperate attacks" on the judiciary. Alan Shatter's released a statement this evening, condemning a number of comments made in the wake of the Moriarty report published earlier this week, which he said were "intended to bring the judiciary into disrepute and to undermine public confidence in the administration of justice." Minister Shatter said the statements which he claimed " endanger public confidence" in the judiciary and the courts, are "entirely unacceptable and are to be deplored".

Both former Minister Michael Lowry and Businessman Denis O'Brien have been critical of Mr. Justice Michael Moriarty in the wake of the report.

Tonight at 22.45 GMT the United Nations passed resolution 1973/211, which imposes a no-fly zone across Libya, as well as restricting the asset movements from Libyan national companies. Amid celebratory scenes in Benghazi with lots of fireworks and lots of automatic weapons fire , China, India, Russia and Brazil (sometimes as a block called BRIC) all abstained along with Germany. I'm posting here, a very interesting article by Michael Albert of Z Space/Z Mag in which he looks at the idea of differences of opinion on the left and teases out the issues of should we aim to be "right" (as in correct) - which we should, but also if we have a difference of opinion with others or other groups on the left, should we have a "split" or disregard their past opinions also? And then, if it turns out the that other person/group on the left was correct in their analysis and action(s), should we be bitter that we weren't or should we be thankful that those who were right won out?

I'm posting the article in full, with a link to the article on Albert's blog. read full story / add a comment

Below is an open letter to Bob Geldof regarding the offer he has received of an honorary doctorate from Ben Gurion University in Israel. The IPSC urges Mr. Geldof not to accept this dubious doctorate, for to do so would be aiding in the whitewash of Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people. We would also ask you to send emails to Bob Geldof asking him not to accept this doctorate, at the following mails:

How can we think beyond the immediate pressures of responding to the recession, the IMF/EU bailout, the elections and so on? How has the ground shifted under the feet of social movements in the last few years? Where do struggles for equality and global justice stand now? This event brings together activists and researchers from Mexico, Scotland, the US and Ireland in an open event aimed at thinking strategically and understanding both what is now becoming harder to imagine and what is now becoming possible. read full story / add a comment

In October 2010, the Irish website Count Me Out, which had until then supplied the forms needed to carry out formal Defection from the Roman Catholic Church, suspended distribution of the forms and its own activity as a result of a statement from the Catholic Church in Ireland regarding the acceptance of defection requests. But was the Archdiocese of Dublin being truthful when it issued its statement? Italian anti-clericalist Francesca Palazzi Arduini examines the changes in which led to the Church's statement and finds that the answer is "NO".. read full story / add a comment
