By the time I lived in community with Phil Berrigan, he was a wise old man. He had served many years in U.S. prisons for his nonviolent resistance to the Vietnam War and nuclear weapons - initiating the draft board raids and plowshares movements. After I moved on, he would serve many more years. He was in the very best sense disillusioned with popular American pretensions. He suffered from few illusions. read full story / add a comment

Alan Shatter letter to William Irwin MLA
national / rights, freedoms and repression / news report Friday February 03, 2012 09:05 by Derek Leinster   image 3 images
Labour TD Robert Dowds is putting down a Dail question to the Justice Minister Alan Satter based on Alan Shatter's letter to WIlliam Irwin MLA - see graphic. The question will ask:

"What consideration is being given to issues relating to the former Bethany Home and the appropriateness and practicality of such issues being addressed in a satisfactory manner and would the Minister make a statement on the subject."

This is the second time that a member of the Northern Assembly has expressed concern about the government's neglect of this group of survivors. Minister Arlene Foster wrote to Martin McAleese asking him to include Bethany Home in in his investigation of Magdalen laundries. The government refused to allow this - see letters. read full story / add a comment

Exclusive - Full scale of abuse against Catholic worker revealed
Seanin Graham, Health Correspondent,

The full scale of the sectarian abuse against a Catholic social worker can be revealed today. Co Down woman Laurena Kane (43) was awarded a £60,000 payout from the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust at the High Court last week but The Irish News has now seen the result of an internal investigation which sets out the case in full.

While the trust did not admit liability until last month, the internal 2009 investigation concludes the "sustained" sectarian comments represented a "serious case of alleged harassment" which the trust failed to address.

The leaked document reveals the contents of interviews with the "chief protagonist" of the abuse - named in court as Barbara Lowry - and six other staff members.

Predictable lamestream media reviewers had little to say about how The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is rife with current political, sociological, technological and religious implications. The movie is about a 24-year-old, gothic-punk-looking, cyberspace hacker, with an issue with men who have histories or sexual or violent predation. She is on a mission to right the world of a few rapists and killers. This is not a standard movie review. Plenty reviews already exist on the Internet for you to get the gist of the story and its characters. This critique is strictly in regards to the movie and is more about interesting political and social commentary in relation to the movie and some of its reviews.

"Left" groups of a similar stamp to the ULA are being integrated into the highest echelons of government in other parts of Europe to act as responsible oppositions to austerity measures . One such group is Germany's Die Link , the Left Party , whose representative Christine Buchholz sits on the country's Defence Committee, a body 'charged with defending “the security of the country and of Germany’s allies, as well as the interests of Bundeswehr [armed forces] personnel on active service.”'
Shilton argues that the ULA is seen by the Troika as “a useful safety valve for popular opposition to the austerity policies of the major parties, and a potential future collaborator in government to defend the capitalist system against the working class. “
