A brief history of the deforestation of Ireland and why it happened.....
It is well known that Ireland has a very low level of tree cover, among the lowest of any European country – in 2012 it had risen to almost 11% although it is still way below the European average of 30%. Of course about half of this 11% is Sitkha Spruce, which is non-native and causes acidification of the soil. read full story / add a comment

A lot has been written about the Michael McKevitt case over the years since his incarceration in 2001. Whether his reputation as an unrepentant republican is palatable to many people or not, he has endured the wrath of a very vicious print media campaign throughout that time and even before. We overlook the fact that the media onslaught was also waged against his entire family without any justification whatsoever and the standards used against them fell well below anything that we could even attempt to describe as 'normal practice'. read full story / add a comment

People are getting fed up. We have had the Anglo Tapes released and the government decides to go after the whistle blower instead. Since 2008 unemployed has risen to 14% and it would be a lot higher only that 40,000 people are leaving the country every year. The government job initiative is welfare for business interests and as described here is a scam. It is time to high light this even though many have known it for months.
It seems like everytime I view the FAS website more and more real jobs are disappearing from it and being replaced with free labour internships. When I search for specific sectors now all I seem to find are internships. This scheme is absolutely sickening me as it has potentially destroyed several thousand entry level jobs. I can't believe that Joan Burton and the Labour Party have completely ruined the youth labour market with a scheme which is:

This is being kept out of the media, both in Ireland and the USA: From the organization "HARK." Zachary Gelevinger is a young man from Wisconsin who arrived in Belfast Wednesday to enjoy a long-timed planned first trip to Ireland, the home of his Grandmother and a lifetime dream that has turned into a nightmare. Zachary had been corresponding with Political Prisoner Christine Connor and as a gesture of kindness, had organised a visit with Christine on her birthday, arranged by Christine's mother. This act of good will was forever tarnished when the visit was cut short and Zachary was taken out of the visit by the PSNI in handcuffs under suspicion of "Dissident Activity." Please note again that Zachary had not stepped foot in Ireland until Wednesday. read full story / add a comment

The power of the Executive to cast a man into prison without formulating any charge known to the law, and particularly to deny him the judgment of his peers, is in the highest degree odious and is the foundation of all totalitarian government whether Nazi or Communist. - Winston Churchill - Internment Research commissioned by a group of British, backbench, Tory MPs conclude, that European judges have ruled more than 270 cases taken against Britain, has “breached a Convention right”. At the counter-demonstration to Youth Defence's "Rally for Life" march, I was manhandled and arrested for no reason by plain clothes police. In the van, I was pepper sprayed several times while handcuffed behind my back and pinned to the ground. I was kept in a cell for about two hours before being released without charge. David Norris has recently been diagnosed with cancer which he speculated appears to be related to the initial incidence of viral hepatitis which he contracted from tainted drinking water while he was on unpaid Government business in Eastern Europe in 1994.
There is much discussion about this online, but this personal situation may have added fire and urgency to his impassioned breathless speech in defence of the Seanad. Here it is. Share it widely. read full story / add a comment |
