This is the first history of Ireland’s War on Turkey and explains why Britain really made war on the Ottoman Empire. It explains the reasons for the establishment of Palestine and Iraq and why the US was repelled from the League of Nations by the behaviour of the British Empire. It describes the rise of Ataturk and the successful Turkish War of Independence. read full story / add a comment

An account of the experiences of a German boy in a suburb of wartime Cologne with graphic descriptions of life there and further afield in Germany. After the war one of the German children brought to Ireland by the Red Cross and he describes his life in Ireland which he thoroughly enjoyed. He stayed with different families but with a family in Ballinlogh, Co. Mayo, for the most part. This is a very well written memoir with a fresh and informative view of rural Ireland in the 1940s. read full story / add a comment

The Socialist Party's analysis of the Lisbon referendum result, titled: "Lisbon victory not endorsement for hated government" is now online.

A significant 2/1 majority, on a higher turnout, passed the Lisbon Treaty overturning the decision of June 2008. It is clear that the economic crisis served to shift opinion across the board to a yes vote because people felt that passing the Treaty might boost Ireland’s prospects for economic recovery.

Last year Lisbon was rejected because people feared the consequences of the changes it brings to the EU and because of a distrust of the political establishment. For a majority this time around the actual Treaty and its contents were secondary to the economic crisis.

At midday today, Monday 5th October, a demonstration to protest the Palestinian Authority’s action in scuttling the Goldstone Report of the UN Human Rights Council’s Fact Finding Mission to Gaza was held in Ramallah. It had been called over the weekend by a collective of Palestinian civil society including political parties, development organisations, human rights NGOs, and concerned individuals. The demonstration was to give a voice on the streets to the increasing frustration and despair with the unrepresentative and deeply unpopular policies and practices of the Palestinian Authority. A crowd of about 100 people gathered to march down towards the gate of Marine Terminals Ltd. In anticipation of the march by the strikers and their supporters, the company had closed the gates. CALLING ALL ACTIVISTS!

Hi,

We, the National Animal Rights Association (N.A.R.A. - http://www.naracampaigns.org ) will be having protests outside both Charles River Laboratories in Co. Mayo, on Tuesday 24th November. We want to make them the biggest protests the vivisection industry in Ireland has ever seen - but we need your help!

We are calling on everyone to make this day a success, so we would like to invite not only activists in Ireland, but campaigners from around the world to attend!

So we can start planning how many cars/mini-buses we'll need on the day, it is vital that you let us know - as soon as possible - if you can make it, or if you can offer transport!

International Activists: Please get in touch so we can sort out accommodation for you!

Local Activists: Please let us know how many activists you can accommodate in your home! read full story / add a comment

When Michael O’Leary joined the yes campaign I thought to myself that this would actually be beneficial for the No side. For most Irish people, O’Leary’s arrogance and clown antics are irritating the best of times. He did not appear to be as knowledgeable as Declan Ganley on the overall text of the Lisbon treaty. O’Leary just kept repeating the same two points over and over again, the Commissioner and taxation. I thought that O’Leary’s support for the Yes side was a blessing in disguise. I believed that his personality alone would drive some people to vote No.
