Ireland’s charities will require additional financial and infrastructural support from Government to help them prepare for new regulatory requirements set out in the Charities Bill 2007, a conference was told on Thursday.

Delegates from a cross-section of charities put their position in relation to the bill, which is currently being passed through the Dáil, to the Minister of State in the Department of Community, Rural, and Gaeltacht Affairs, Pat Carey TD, at a national conference organised by The Wheel, a leading support and representative network for the community and voluntary sector in Ireland.

TEEU rejects treaty over real practical concerns in relation to workers rights. The premise of their argument is the ambiguity surrounding the right to industrial action for those working in 'goods and services'.

Other concerns include the acceptance of unequal wages for migrant workers in the 'goods and services' industry. Several judgements from the European Court have fallen in favour of Employers.

The court recently found that a Polish subcontractor operating in Germany was entitled to pay workers less than half the agreed minimum wage for the construction sector, because the right to provide unrestricted services took priority over collective wage agreements.

These are concrete valid reasons that highlight how Lisbon is a bad deal for workers across Europe.

The following article is copylifted from the Irish Times

Indymedia Antwerp and one of its contributors are being sued by a local business man for damages of 10,000 euro each hour an article is online. The article is a translation of a petition to stop big game elephant hunting. Indymedia Antwerp has been calling for solidarity to other groups on the global network. ndymedia Antwerpen is an undepended newssite which is supported by only volunteer work. On our newsite there is no censure without strong motivation. Within the theme of the site everyone can write what he or she likes. Except when readers ask articles become hidden or slightly modified. This is our conviction and we will change it for no reason, especially not because of a bad past post-colonial hunting adventure.

RUC-PSNI nail their colours to the mast

03/05/08

An éirígí initiative to mark the 92nd anniversary of the Easter Rising has come under both verbal and physical attack in an area of the Six Counties notorious for sectarian discrimination against the nationalist community.

While the distribution of thousands of copies of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic and other éirígí commemorative events were well received in Belfast, Dublin, the Donegal Gaeltacht and north Munster, the response from some in the south Derry area has been nothing short of vitriolic. read full story / add a comment

A strategic interest enables your ultimate goal or agenda, and strategies are generalised plans to achieve these goals. A tactic is a specific tool to advance that agenda, using what you actually have right now - not what you think you ought to have. It's unwise for a democrat to confuse long-term strategies with short-term tactics. read full story / add a comment

The Ban Bus comes to Galway
The Galway One World Centre, The Galway Alliance against War and Amnesty International are delighted to host a photo exhibition and talk by Australian photographer John Rodsted, Norwegian campaigner Mette Sofie Eliseussen and Irish Journalist Aine Bonner of the Star newspaper. The event will take place in The Galway City Museum at 6.30 on Thursday 8th of May.
This event is part of a nationwide tour organized by the Cluster Munitions Coalition Ireland (CMC). The coalition is a group of Irish non-governmental organizations working to achieve a new international treaty to ban cluster munitions by the end of 2008. Irish Citizens have a unique opportunity to influence this process as the Department of Foreign Affairs is hosting ‘The Dublin Diplomatic Conference on Cluster Munitions’. This major international conference will take place in Croke Park on the 19th – 30th of May. read full story / add a comment
The political climate inside Iran is now horrifically tense. Women, gay men and lesbians, students, workers; all are caught in the middle of the stand-off between the regime and imperialism. Arrests have increased and intimidation is rife. Any slight ‘disobedience’ of the theocratic regime is portrayed as a threat to state security.

That is why principled solidarity is so necessary. We in HOPI are determined to show the reality behind the threat of war and to give practical and political suppor t. We are campaigning for trade union support and have a resolution which we would urge all activists to use.

We're told Lisbon is to make the EU efficient. Why then haven't the parliamentarians that want this efficiency reduced their numbers (to about 60 TDs in Ireland) to reflect the fact that two thirds (80% reported for Britain & Germany) of their law-making functions are already transferred to Europe. TDs are rapidly making themselves powerless, redundant, and sidelining democracy and the Constitution. read full story / add a comment
