The sweeping House of Commons reforms proposed by Green MP Ellie Chowns are evidence that the Mrs Dutt-Pauker types have moved from Peter Simple's columns into public life. We're in for a bumpy ride, says Sean Walsh.

international / worker & community struggles and protests / opinion/analysis Thursday May 20, 2010 13:38 by Paddy Hackett
The proletariat provides the socio-ontological conditions for emancipation from ideology and exploitation. This is based on the proletariat’s unique relationship to the production process as source of wealth, value and capital–the very material basis for the existence of capitalist society. This peculiar oppression of the proletariat is what gives it its truth conditioning property. read full story / add a comment

The current 'Gulf Spill' is only one of scores of such disasters in recent decades. The same pattern of reckless failures; drip release of information; cover-up and collusion between operators and statutory agencies is evident throughout. Protesters are invariably vilified or criminalized so that attention may be directed away from the really criminal irresponsibility. Read the following quotes from highly credible sources and remember Pat's 100 days in jail today. read full story / add a comment

According to the International Trade Union Confederation more than 2500 trade union activists have been killed in Colombia during the last fifteen years. Despite the fact that trade union activists in Colombia are seldom guilty of anything more than seeking to secure decent working conditions for themselves and their communities, they face severe ongoing repression including abduction, torture, intimidation and murder. There is a culture of impunity in Colombia, and those who commit these acts are seldom held accountable.
Following on from a well- attended introductory panel discussion that was held in Galway last October, Galway Trades Council and coalition of Trade Union and Human Rights campaigners are delighted to have the opportunity to host a public talk on Thursday 27th of May in the Western Hotel, Prospect Hill featuring a visiting Colombian Union Leader Jorge Gamboa. read full story / add a comment

PRESS RELEASE

Left alone to die

19ú May/Bealtaine 2010

Not Now, Not Again. Not another Irish Republican, how soon we’ve forgotten.

29 years ago ten Irish Republican Prisoners of War gave their lives on hunger strike for Political Status, for Ireland. Each was scarified on the altar of British imperialism draped with the Butchers Apron.

The administration in Occupied Ireland (DUP, SDLP and Provisional Sinn Féin) supported by their masters in Westminster are now hoping to freshen their blood soaked apron with another Irish Republican. His name, Liam Hannaway.

Some of Italy's most senior police officers have been given jail sentences of up to five years for what the prosecutors called a "terrible" attack on demonstrators at the 2001 G8 meeting in Genoa and an attempted cover-up. It isn’t expected that any of the police will serve sentences because delays in bringing the prosecutions mean the offences are “ timed-out “ under statutes of limitations . But several of the most senior defendants were also given five-year disqualifications from public office . Victims of the police expressed delight at the sentences. read full story / add a comment

The Financial Times says it had no problem editorially with an Amnesty International ad criticising Shell's practices in Nigeria but had to pull it for legal reasons. In case anyone is in any doubt what people in Ireland and beyond are up against when trying to get justice, remember you are not really dealing with the touchy-feely Shell that sponsors local events in Erris but with a well-oiled, well-funded global judicial machine that will stop at nothing to maximise profits.
