Following article appears on P. 8 of "Clare People" 31/10/06. The article reveals the tension that exists sonce the declaration following the Ploughshares acquittal that nonviolent dorect action will be employed to demilitarise the airport if the Government fails to demilitarise the airport. The initial State repsonse to the declaration has been to deploy 40 Garda and redeploy the army to protect the U.S. war machine from the nonviolent direct action of the the peace movement. The Green Party emerged out of the nonviolent direct action of the German anti-war movement, strange that Councillor Meaney can remain a member of the irish Green Party while supporting the U.S. war effort and attacking the Irish peace movement! Press Release Issued by Irish Forestry Contractors’ Association (IFCA) The importing of a boat load of wood pulp from Scotland via Waterford Port on the week ending Saturday 23rd, October, 2006 by Coillte has caused consternation among members of the Irish Forestry Contractors’ Association. The wood pulp was imported by Coillte for use in the production of OSB board timber product in its timber mill in Belview, Waterford. IFCA is a stakeholder in the Irish forestry sector and it was not consulted prior to the making of the decision to import the boat load of wood pulp in Waterford Port. IFCA is concerned about the prospects of contamination of native Irish timber products, which is a distinct possibility as a consequence of importing wood pulp. read full story / add a comment

Sometime ago, retired Justice Kinlan wrote a damning report on our prisons. McDowell, Minister for Justice Equality and Law Reform, went into a 'huff'. He accused Justice Kinlan of being out to get him. The question remains:- A young man was brutally murdered in a cell while five prisoners looked on. Six people sharing one cell.....this had to end in disaster at some stage. read full story / add a comment

The Executive of my Union, the Civil & Public Service Union (CPSU), at their Monthly Meeting held today, Thursday, November 2nd has fully backed the nurses' rally on 22nd November and are calling on all their members to support this protest. The CPSU will be issuing a Circular to all members in the next few days calling on all CPSU members to take part in the nurses’ protest. However, great as it is that the CPSU are mobilising all their members to support the nurses’ rally on November 22nd, we really need to get the rest of the Trade Union leaders up off their backsides. Now that the CPSU Executive will be officially supporting the nurses’ rally on 22nd November, this will put further pressure on the Executive of the Dublin Council of Trade Unions (DCTU) to officially support the nurses’ rally, and to organise a mass mobilisation of workers, similar to, if not bigger than the Irish Ferries ‘Day of Protest’ last December, and they will get the numbers as health is an emotive issue for many people! read full story / add a comment

The Scariest thing in Derry this Halloween “Last night I watched our city stagger out of the bars and clubs. Broken bottles and cut eyes. Girls in bright clothes taunting boys with gold rings. I stood there for hours listening as it turned blunt and angrily cast around for the wrong look or a flicker of fear to attack. Ryanair are famous for the use of spin and 'selective' figures to hide the truth, recent examples being pilot working hours, state subsidies, negative polluting externalities, disability charges etc. The latest is the number of workers employed per aircraft. This is an interesting report on some research into the study of cockroaches from the Free University Of Brussels in Beligum. The findings show that they follow some simple decision making rules and this has helped open up the understanding of these creatures and other insects too because they also follow similar patterns or rules. It seems that they operate without any leaders. Now if we could just do that. It also intriguing because it shows that the idea of equality and some forth is not just a human construct but is something that goes to the heart of nature. read full story / add a comment

A publication called Centre Focus is a regular newspaper funded by FAS. It uses as an office the Centre for The unemployed North Main st. The building is owned by Cork Council of Trade unions. In a series of tabloid style articles it has raised concerns about sterotyping and attackiing those that are involved in progressive activist work and in particular the greater understanding between different ethnic and religous groups. Many complaints have been made about its editorial style but why is it not being discussed on a wider format.? read full story / add a comment
