The ongoing Omagh civil litigation has been listed for 16th April 2007 when the case is expected to finally get under way. Even at this early stage, many observers in the legal profession consider it, as being prejudiced, deeply flawed and under the present format it can only return an unfair and dishonest judgment. The British authorities have the case structured in such that it will deny the defendants any hope of defending themselves in the case. read full story / add a comment

Ortega promised to uphold the trade agreement and will probably be buddies
with Hugo Chavez, which will displease Bush, however given Ortega's recent

The exit polls are suggesting Ortega is in the lead after 15% of the Ballots

The 2007 Budget was ratified by a large majority in the government. The current budget continues the policy of attacking the Israeli workers’ living conditions. Welfare benefits are frozen; the privatisation of the most basic social services continues; and unemployment benefit for workers under the age of 28 are simply cancelled. The government forces us – the workers, the unemployed, the pensioners and the youth in the country – to pay the price for its military adventure in Lebanon. And while the government attacks all the working women and men in Israel, it does not forget to take care of its real friends – the capitalists. This budget will grant them benefits and tax cuts.

Since 1997 I have endeavoured to highlight the need to establish an environmenal end of life vehicle disposal network that would comply with an EU Directive on End of Life Vehicles and help clean up the environment for all of our people to enjoy. My plan was to make Ireland the pride of Europe and a leader in the proper environment recycling and disposal of motor vehicles. Despite knocking on many doors, I experienced an old Irish problem of notyet, not yet, not yet. read full story / add a comment

The Skelligs Rocks, 8 miles off the coast of Co. Kerry, constitute one of only two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Ireland. However, the Office of Public Works (OPW) is currently engaged in reconstruction work there. On the South Peak of Skellig Michael, an altar, dating probably to the ninth century, has been destroyed by unsupervised workmen. In addition, there has been extensive rebuilding carried out on the main complex, which has led to considerable damage to the original structures. The work has proceeded without an Environmental Impact Assessment; while the Department of the Environment and OPW have argued that, because the Skelligs are a national monument (thus covered by the National Monuments Act 2004) and because the current work is part of an ongoing programme of conservation dating back to the 1980’s, neither an EIA nor planning permission is necessary. read full story / add a comment

Fresh talks may take place between Shell Ireland and local residents in north Co Mayo in an effort to resolve the long-running dispute over the Corrib gas terminal site.

The Shell to Sea campaign, which represents residents opposed to the pipeline, is due to outline a new initiative aimed at breaking the ongoing deadlock.

Details have not been disclosed, but reports this morning say the proposal could allow for fresh dialogue between Shell, the Government and the local community. read full story / add a comment

The recent Bertie Ahern controversy showed that the Irish Times believes it has a right to depose Taoisigh it disapproves of. They already have the scalps of Haughey and Reynolds and now they want Bertie's. The paper holds such a powerful position in Irish public life that its faults cannot be openly discussed. A debate between Minister for Communications, Noel Dempsey, and Ryle Dwyer of the Irish Examiner illustrates the problem. Dempsey failed to mention that the paper broke the law. Neither did he dare to challenge the paper about its over the top anti-Fianna Fail bias. And nobody dares to mention the connection between the paper and the British Foreign Office initiated by Major Thomas McDowell in 1969. So confident are the media professionals who defend the paper, that they simply toss off rhetorical put downs, as in Ryle Dwyers's reply to the Minister. It is past time that the bastion of Irish investigative journalism should itself be investigated. read full story / add a comment

An important event is taking place on Wednesday and Thursday (8th to 9th November) in the Burlington Hotel, Dublin. Ireland’s Atlantic “Petroleum Province” is being discussed. Confused? This “Province” consists of all the Irish Atlantic oil and gas fields that have been explored so far.
At present, the Irish Government is handing out licences to Shell, Exxon-Mobil, Statoil, and others as fast as they can. The Irish Government and the global oil and gas industry are working in close partnership, and have been for many years. Shell and Statoil, the energy multinationals involved in the Corrib project, will be represented, as will the Minister for Marine and Natural Resources, who is to give the opening address.
Follow the links below for further details. It is important that this event is advertized widely, and actively picketed, to express the outrage of the public against this collaboration of elected representatives in the giveaway of Ireland’s natural resources. read full story / add a comment
