The Labour Movement
national / worker & community struggles and protests / news report Friday February 13, 2009 17:02 by Worker   text 2 comments (last - saturday february 14, 2009 00:39)   image 1 image
The Labour party has overtaken Fianna Fáil in the recent TNS/MRBI poll. The first time in the history of the state. A historic moment for those interested in the wider labour movement (as opposed to the revolutionary movement olr the labour party). I am not too familiar with the methodology behind this poll but I assume it is a fair and honest reflection of the electorate at the present moment. The TNS/MRBI poll predicted the outcome of the last election with relative precision.

Fianna Fáil’s satisfaction rating has plummeted to 14 percent. 62 per cent want a change of government. The support for the parties is as follows: Fianna Fáil, 22 per cent (down 5 points); Fine Gael, 32 per cent (down 2 points); Labour, 24 per cent (up 10 points); Sinn Féin, 9 per cent (up 1 point); Green Party, 4 per cent (no change); and Independents/others, 9 per cent (down 4 points). The message is simple: the electorate want Fianna Fáil out of office. read full story / add a comment

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) has called a National Day of Action for Saturday, February 21st over the Government's Pension Levy, the lack of protection for Private Sector Pensions and the Cuts Generally. March Assembles Garden of Remberance, Parnell Square, Dublin at 2pm. I'm calling on all (all workers, private and public sector, the unemployed, those who've been affected by the cuts generally, the voluntary and community sector and the general public) to attend in mass numbers to show this 'Government' that we're as mad as hell, and that Saturday, February 21st is only the start of a long war of attrition. read full story / add a comment

Eluana Englaro has died peacefully this evening

Tomorrow Italy's progressives and secularists will demonstrate against Berlusoni's unconstitutional decree attempting to ensure a woman who was in a coma since 1992 continues in that vegetative state.

In Berlusconi's words :- "She is alive enough to get pregnant". Leaving one only to wonder who would have fathered her child and what would have been the morailty of such an act.

However, the 11th president of the Italian Republic Goirgio Napolitano refused to sign Berlusconi's decree deeming it to be unconstitional. A petition started by Umberto Eco and Dario Foy amongst others has now collected over 1000 signatures. read full story / add a comment

There is a tendency to dismiss the rantings of Kevin Myers as mere guff designed to sell newspapers. However, this would be to ignore the collateral damage his phosphorous cluster bomb prose inflicts. His salvo last Friday attacking the legacy of Bob Doyle and his comrades who fought in Spain against fascism should be a call to make next Saturday's commemoration in their honour a defiant rebuttal of all Myers' and his ilk stand for. read full story / add a comment

Governments tax plan for all PAYE workers

Our government has become more and more open about their plans for us. Cowan wants to drive down our living standards 12% and has already cut all our wages through the tax levy and slashed the wages of workers in the public sector further through the so called ‘pensions levy’. He openly talks of “four more years of even steeper cuts”. He is so confident of us taking this lying down that he had the cheek to announce his intention to drive down our living standards at what even RTE referred to as the “Dublin Chamber of Commerce's lavish AGM dinner which cost €160” a head. read full story / add a comment

Cork is biting back at the recession with a new web-started community which aims to get us outside working together to grow our own food. Cork Food Web imagines a network of community gardens, allotments, urban and rural farms and food parks all over Cork city and county run autonomously by local communities and linked by the shared need to feed ourselves and mind our environment. The website is a ‘social networking site’ so allows users to create their own profile, get to know each other and form groups. In just a few months of existence membership has grown to 154, with members from the city and all across Cork county forming online interest groups, exchanging information and skills and creating events together. read full story / add a comment
